Worship: Paul’s Last Letter / Wellness: When Prayer for Healing Is Presumption

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Paul desperately wanted to see his son in Christian service. But just in case he was killed before Timothy could arrive, he warned and advised him of many things on his heart that he knew would challenge Timothy’s ministry and Christians in general. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says that if you want God to work a miracle of healing, you must be willing to be committed and obedient to the laws of health. He then quoted from the book A Call to Medical Evangelism. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Proverbs 30:5  Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Ecclesiastes 11:6  In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“‘Thou therefore, my son,’ Paul continued, ‘be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.’ AA 500.2

“The true minister of God will not shun hardship or responsibility. From the Source that never fails those who sincerely seek for divine power, he draws strength that enables him to meet and overcome temptation, and to perform the duties that God places upon him. The nature of the grace that he receives, enlarges his capacity to know God and His Son. His soul goes out in longing desire to do acceptable service for the Master. And as he advances in the Christian pathway he becomes ‘strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.’ This grace enables him to be a faithful witness of the things that he has heard. He does not despise or neglect the knowledge that he has received from God, but commits this knowledge to faithful men, who in their turn teach others. AA 501.1

“In this his last letter to Timothy, Paul held up before the younger worker a high ideal, pointing out the duties devolving on him as a minister of Christ. ‘Study to show thyself approved unto God,’ the apostle wrote, ‘a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.’ ‘Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.’ AA 501.2

“The apostle warned Timothy against the false teachers who would seek to gain entrance into the church. ‘This know also,’ he declared, ‘that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy; . . . having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.’ AA 502.1

“Fearing that Timothy’s mild, yielding disposition might lead him to shun an essential part of his work, Paul exhorted him to be faithful in reproving sin and even to rebuke with sharpness those who were guilty of gross evils. Yet he was to do this “with all long-suffering and doctrine.” He was to reveal the patience and love of Christ, explaining and enforcing his reproofs by the truths of the word. AA 503.2

“After speaking of the scene of his trial before Nero, the desertion of his brethren, and the sustaining grace of a covenant-keeping God, Paul closed his letter by commending his beloved Timothy to the guardianship of the Chief Shepherd, who, though the undershepherds might be stricken down, would still care for His flock.” AA 508.2

This study is based on the Second Epistle to Timothy and chapter 49, “Paul’s Last Letter,” The Acts of the Apostles (AA), by Ellen G. White.)

For Health’s Sake…

“Many have expected that God would keep them from sickness merely because they have asked Him to do so. But God did not regard their prayers, because their faith was not made perfect by works. God will not work a miracle to keep those from sickness who have no care for themselves, but are continually violating the laws of health and make no efforts to prevent disease. When we do all we can on our part to have health, then may we expect that the blessed results will follow, and we can ask God in faith to bless our efforts for the preservation of health. He will then answer our prayer, if His name can be glorified thereby. But let all understand that they have a work to do. God will not work in a miraculous manner to preserve the health of persons who are taking a sure course to make themselves sick, by their careless inattention to the laws of health. {CME 35.2}–Ellen G. White, A Call to Medical Evangelism, p. 35.2

Pastor Flemons then noted the difference between faith and presumption, quoting in part this statement from the same author in her inspired book on the life of Christ, The Desire of Ages:

“But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is secure against presumption. For presumption isSatan’s counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God’s promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse transgression. Faith would have led our first parents to trust the love of God, and to obey His commands. Presumption led them to transgress His law, believing that His great love would save them from the consequence of their sin. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures.” DA 126.1

Words of Encouragement

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Proverbs 29:25  The fear of man bringeth a snare: But whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“Paul before Nero–how striking the contrast! The haughty monarch before whom the man of God was to answer for his faith, had reached the height of earthly power, authority, and wealth, as well as the lowest depths of crime and iniquity. In power and greatness he stood unrivaled. There were none to question his authority, none to resist his will. Kings laid their crowns at his feet. Powerful armies marched at his command, and the ensigns of his navies betokened victory. His statue was set up in the halls of justice, and the decrees of senators and the decisions of judges were but the echo of his will. Millions bowed in obedience to his mandates. The name of Nero made the world tremble. . . . AA 493.2

“The Jews brought against Paul the old charges of sedition and heresy, and both Jews and Romans accused him of instigating the burning of the city. While these accusations were urged against him, Paul preserved an unbroken serenity. The people and the judges looked at him in surprise. They had been present at many trials and had looked upon many a criminal, but never had they seen a man wear a look of such holy calmness as did the prisoner before them. The keen eyes of the judges, accustomed to read the countenances of prisoners, searched Paul’s face in vain for some evidence of guilt. When he was permitted to speak in his own behalf, all listened with eager interest. AA 494.2

“Once more Paul has an opportunity to uplift before a wondering multitude the banner of the cross. As he gazes upon the throng before him,–Jews, Greeks, Romans, with strangers from many lands,–his soul is stirred with an intense desire for their salvation. He loses sight of the occasion, of the perils surrounding him, of the terrible fate that seems so near. He sees only Jesus, the Intercessor, pleading before God in behalf of sinful men. With more than human eloquence and power, Paul presents the truths of the gospel. He points his hearers to the sacrifice made for the fallen race. He declares that an infinite price has been paid for man’s redemption. Provision has been made for him to share the throne of God. By angel messengers, earth is connected with heaven, and all the deeds of men, whether good or evil, are open to the eye of Infinite Justice. AA 494.3

“Never before had Nero heard the truth as he heard it on this occasion. Never before had the enormous guilt of his own life been so revealed to him. The light of heaven pierced the sin-polluted chambers of his soul, and he trembled with terror at the thought of a tribunal before which he, the ruler of the world, would finally be arraigned, and his deeds receive their just award. He feared the apostle’s God, and he dared not pass sentence upon Paul, against whom no accusation had been sustained. A sense of awe restrained for a time his bloodthirsty spirit. AA 496.1

“For a moment, heaven was opened to the guilty and hardened Nero, and its peace and purity seemed desirable. . . . But only for a moment was the thought of pardon welcomed. Then the command was issued that Paul be taken back to his dungeon; and as the door closed upon the messenger of God, the door of repentance closed forever against the emperor of Rome. . . . AA 496.2

“Not long after this, Nero sailed on his infamous expedition to Greece, . . . . Returning to Rome with great pomp, he surrounded himself with his courtiers and engaged in scenes of revolting debauchery. In the midst of this revelry a voice of tumult in the streets was heard. A messenger dispatched to learn the cause, returned with the appalling news that Galba, at the head of an army, was marching rapidly upon Rome, that insurrection had already broken out in the city, and that the streets were filled with an enraged mob, which, threatening death to the emperor and all his supporters, was rapidly approaching the palace. AA 496.3

“In this time of peril, Nero had not, like the faithful Paul, a powerful and compassionate God on whom to rely. Fearful of the suffering and possible torture he might be compelled to endure at the hands of the mob, the wretched tyrant thought to end his life by his own hand, but at the critical moment his courage failed. Completely unmanned, he fled ignominiously from the city and sought shelter at a countryseat a few miles distant, but to no avail. His hiding place was soon discovered, and as the pursuing horsemen drew near, he summoned a slave to his aid and inflicted on himself a mortal wound. Thus perished the tyrant Nero, at the early age of thirty-two.” AA 497.1

This study is based on chapter 48, “Paul Before Nero,” The Acts of the Apostles (AA), by Ellen G. White.)

For Health’s Sake…

Used primarily as a flavoring food, garlic is “biblical chemotherapy,” says Pastor Flemons. It kills cancerous cells, but leaves normal healthy cells intact. That is biblical chemotherapy at its best. Scientists are now learning its value, as reviewed in an article entitled, “Garlic holds promise to combat deadly brain tumor.” Sadly, but most likely, it will end up being in a drug and costing more than what people can afford.

“We only need to eat it,” says Pastor Flemons. It strengthens the immune system and guards against simple colds and flu, as well. We recommend taking it in a drink we call Rocket Fuel. It tastes like ginger ale!

Worship: Arrested for the Last Time / Wellness: How to Change America

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Nero had declared Paul innocent and freed him. Then Rome burned. Nero is said to have been responsible for the flames, but that he blamed the fire on Christians and then persecuted them. In time, unbelieving Jews claimed Paul was the instigator of the fire; so soon, he was arrested again. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says politics do not really change America. Right thinking does. If you want to really change America’s morals, it must involve a physical change. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Exodus 19:5  Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine.

Hebrews 4:7 (last part)  To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

For Heaven’s Sake…

This time Paul was placed in a gloomy dungeon in Rome–not in a home, where he could freely accept the company of friends and those interested in hearing about Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Alone, except for Luke who became his connection to the outside, Paul became “the object of universal execration.” The crime was “one of the basest and most terrible of crimes against the city and the nation.” (AA 490.1)

In Rome’s dungeon, Paul experienced loneliness and the agony of being without companionship. Paul’s desire for love and sympathy was implanted in the human heart by God Himself. In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus longed for the love and sympathy of his disciples. Through Onesiphorus, God supplied to Paul gladness and cheer. Paul mentioned him in 2 Timothy 1:16-18. It was his last letter. It was written from Rome’s dungeon: Paul’s Gethsemane.

(This study is based on chapter 47, “The Final Arrest” in The Acts of the Apostles (AA), by Ellen G. White.)

For Health’s Sake…

Toxins must first be removed from the mind, says Pastor Flemons. In the book A Call to Medical Evangelism, the way to really change America is wrapped up in this statement:

“If we would elevate the moral standard in any country where we may be called to go, we must begin by correcting their physical habits. Virtue of character depends upon the right action of the powers of the mind and body.–Counsels on Health, 505. CME 31.1

This is done through teaching obedience to the principles of biblical wellness. Times of Refreshing Wellness Ministry calls it the REFRESHING Way lifestyle. It is described this way:

R – Rely on God. This minimizes or eliminates stress. Stress produces a toxic internal environment, which helps disease to develop and thrive.

E – Eat healthy. Eat a nourishing plant-based diet twice or three times daily and spaced out five hours apart, with the last meal taken five hours before bedtime.

F – Fresh air. It is essential while resting and exercising for the body to receive the negative ions found in fresh air. It oxygenates the blood.

R – Rest. Getting to bed by 9:30 nightly allows the body to regenerate, even heal itself.

E – Exercise. Exercise helps oxygenate the blood and reduce stress. Walking daily or gardening is a must.

S – Self-Control. Abstaining from all things harmful and doing only in moderation those things that are good is discipline, temperance or self-control. Discipline is essential for whole health.

H – H2O, water. Drinking half your body’s weight in ounces helps expel toxins. All the organs of elimination depend on water to get rid of toxins. If your urine isn’t clear, you’re not drinking enough water.

I – In the sun. Daily getting 20 minutes of sunlight is recommended for adequate vitamin D.

N – Never giving up. Press toward the mark. Perseverance is essential to regaining and maintaining health.

G – Giving to others is directly associated with healing. Isaiah 58:6-9 mentions various ways to help others and adds, “Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy reward.”

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  The captain of the imperial guards had granted comparative freedom to Paul to pursue the work of the gospel. Then he was replaced by one from whom Paul could expect no special favor. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, quoted King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 8:11, who said, “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Pastor Flemons says that there are two reasons why our bad habits haven’t killed us yet. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Hebrews 12:1-2  Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 4:15-16  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“The Jews were now more active than ever in their efforts against Paul, and they found an able helper in the profligate woman whom Nero had made his second wife, and who, being a Jewish proselyte, lent all her influence to aid their murderous designs against the champion of Christianity. AA 485.2

“Paul could hope for little justice from the Caesar to whom he had appealed. Nero was more debased in morals, more frivolous in character, and at the same time capable of more atrocious cruelty, than any ruler who had preceded him. The reins of government could not have been entrusted to a more despotic ruler. The first year of his reign had been marked by the poisoning of his young stepbrother, the rightful heir to the throne. From one depth of vice and crime to another, Nero had descended, until he had murdered his own mother, and then his wife. There was no atrocity which he would not perpetrate, no vile act to which he would not stoop. In every noble mind he inspired only abhorrence and contempt.

“The details of the iniquity practiced in his court are too degrading, too horrible, for description. His abandoned wickedness created disgust and loathing, even in many who were forced to share his crimes. They were in constant fear as to what enormities he would suggest next. Yet even such crimes as Nero’s did not shake the allegiance of his subjects. He was acknowledged as the absolute ruler of the whole civilized world. More than this, he was made the recipient of divine honors and was worshiped as a god. AA 486.1

“From the viewpoint of human judgment, Paul’s condemnation before such a judge was certain. But the apostle felt that so long as he was loyal to God, he had nothing to fear. The One who in the past had been his protector could shield him still from the malice of the Jews and from the power of Caesar. AA 486.2

“And God did shield His servant. At Paul’s examination the charges against him were not sustained, and, contrary to the general expectation, and with a regard for justice wholly at variance with his character, Nero declared the prisoner guiltless. Paul’s bonds were removed; he was again a free man.” AA 486.3

(This study is based on chapter 46, “At Liberty” in The Acts of the Apostles (AA), by Ellen G. White.)

For Health’s Sake…

For one, God is just so merciful to us. Secondly, God made our bodies so that they can “bear long with abuse.” But we are warned that in time, if we don’t change, we will not be able to prevent the inevitable: dying before our time.

Pastor Flemons says that you can stop disease before it comes by obeying the laws of health. Neatly packed in the acronym REFRESHING, biblical wellness is found in obeying these ten laws of health:

R – Rely on God.

E – Eat healthy. Eat a plant-based diet twice or three times daily and spaced out five hours apart, with the last meal five hours before bedtime.

F – Fresh air. It is essential while resting and exercising.

R – Rest. Getting to bed by 9:30 nightly allows the body to heal itself.

E – Exercise. Walking daily or gardening is a must.

S – Self-Control. Abstaining from all things harmful and doing only in moderation those things that are good is temperance or self-control.

H – H2O, water. Drink half your body’s weight in ounces.

I – In the sun. Daily getting 20 minutes of sunlight is recommended for adequate vitamin D.

N – Never give up.

Worship: Prison Letters / Wellness: Lessons, Testimonies of Healing from Amish Country

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Paul’s writings prove that “neutrality in a crisis is treason,” says Pastor Flemons. But Paul’s writings also make it plain that there is no limit to the blessings that the children of God may receive. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, briefly shared his experiences among the Amish. Listen to the recording for the full impact of his testimony.

However, he witnessed a person’s sheer ecstasy over the very idea of being medicine free. This is rare among a nation of people who tend to not be emotional. This woman has been on three different blood pressure medicines. Still, she had never seen such low blood pressure readings, until she followed the directions for natural healing. Since following God’s method of healing, another woman cannot now find the breast tumor that was once the size of a tennis ball. And that is after only one month! Another person’s symptoms baffled doctors, but Pastor Flemons suspected blood and digestive parasites. As a result, improvements are being seen, and there is less discomfort. No doubt, parasites have been the problem. Pastor Flemons has found that the Amish, who already live pretty stress free, respond quicker to biblical wellness methods than those who live in the concrete jungles of the city.

Words of Encouragement

Romans 8:38-39  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate  from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Revelation 3:20, 21  Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“The apostle Paul early in his Christian experience was given special opportunities to learn the will of God concerning the followers of Jesus. He was ‘caught up to the third heaven,’ ‘into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.’ He himself acknowledged that many ‘visions and revelations’ had been given him ‘of the Lord.’ His understanding of the principles of gospel truth was equal to that of ‘the very chiefest apostles.’ 2 Corinthians 12:2, 4, 1, 11. He had a clear, full comprehension of ‘the breadth, and length, and depth, and height’ of ‘the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.’ Ephesians 3:18, 19. AA 469.1

“Paul could not tell all that he had seen in vision; for among his hearers were some who would have misapplied his words. But that which was revealed to him enabled him to labor as a leader and a wise teacher, and also molded the messages that he in later years sent to the churches. The impression that he received when in vision was ever with him, enabling him to give a correct representation of Christian character. By word of mouth and by letter he bore a message that ever since has brought help and strength to the church of God. To believers today this message speaks plainly of the dangers that will threaten the church, and the false doctrines that they will have to meet. AA 469.2

“The apostle’s desire for those to whom he addressed his letters of counsel and admonition was that they should ‘be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine;’ but that they should all come into ‘the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.’ He entreated those who were followers of Jesus in heathen communities not to walk ‘as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God . . . because of the blindness of their heart,’ but ‘circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time.’ Ephesians 4:14, 13, 17, 18; 5:15, 16. He encouraged the believers to look forward to the time when Christ, who ‘loved the church, and gave Himself for it,’ would ‘present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing’ –a church ‘holy and without blemish.’ Ephesians 5:25, 27. AA 470.1

“These messages, written with a power not of man but of God, contain lessons which should be studied by all and which may with profit be often repeated. In them practical godliness is outlined, principles are laid down that should be followed in every church, and the way that leads to life eternal is made plain. AA 470.2

“God fixes no limit to the advancement of those who desire to be ‘filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.’ Through prayer, through watchfulness, through growth in knowledge and understanding, they are to be ‘strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power.’ Thus they are prepared to work for others. . . .” AA 478.3

Worship: The Gospel Is Going to the White House / Wellness: The Importance of Exercise

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Paul, a poor friendless prisoner, could not have been expected to gain attention among the wealthy and titled classes of Rome. The gospel has always been more successful among humbler classes. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, briefly discussed the importance of exercise, noting that the best exercise is walking briskly in fresh air or gardening. Exercise increases the circulation of blood to every cell. It also gets toxins out of cells to help provide healthy blood. As we learn in Leviticus 17:11, “the life of the flesh is in the blood.” And in Proverbs 14:30 we learn that “a sound heart is the life of the flesh.” Exercise does the heart good. Exercise for your life.

Words of Encouragement

Revelation 14:12  Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Revelation 3:10, 11  Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“Yet while the apostle’s work began with the humble and the lowly, its influence extended until it reached the very palace of the emperor. . . . Paul is in bonds as an evildoer; but “the word of God is not bound.” 2 Timothy 2:9 AA 461.2, 461.3

“Nowhere could there exist an atmosphere more uncongenial to Christianity than in the Roman court. Nero seemed to have obliterated from his soul the last trace of the divine, and even of the human, and to bear the impress of Satan. His attendants and courtiers were in general of the same character as himself–fierce, debased, and corrupt. To all appearance it would be impossible for Christianity to gain a foothold in the court and palace of Nero. AA 462.3

“And by what means was an entrance achieved and a firm footing gained for Christianity where even its admission seemed impossible? In his epistle to the Philippians, Paul ascribed to his own imprisonment his success in winning converts to the faith from Nero’s household. Fearful lest it might be thought that his afflictions had impeded the progress of the gospel, he assured them: ‘I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel.’ Philippians 1:12. AA 463.2

“Not by Paul’s sermon’s, but by his bonds, was the attention of the court attracted to Christianity. It was as a captive that he broke from so many souls the bonds that held them in the slavery of sin. Nor was this all. He declared: ‘Many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.’ Philippians 1:14. AA 464.1

“Paul’s patience and cheerfulness during his long and unjust imprisonment, his courage and faith, were a continual sermon. His spirit, so unlike the spirit of the world, bore witness that a power higher than that of earth was abiding with him. And by his example, Christians were impelled to greater energy as advocates of the cause from the public labors of which Paul had been withdrawn. In these ways were the apostle’s bonds influential, so that when his power and usefulness seemed cut off, and to all appearance he could do the least, then it was that he gathered sheaves for Christ in fields from which he seemed wholly excluded. AA 464.2

“Before the close of that two years’ imprisonment, Paul was able to say, ‘My bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places,’ and among those who sent greetings to the Philippians he mentions chiefly them ‘that are of Caesar’s household.’ Verse 13; 4:22. AA 464.3

“Patience as well as courage has its victories. By meekness under trial, no less than by boldness in enterprise, souls may be won to Christ. The Christian who manifests patience and cheerfulness under bereavement and suffering, who meets even death itself with the peace and calmness of an unwavering faith, may accomplish for the gospel more than he could have effected by a long life of faithful labor. Often when the servant of God is withdrawn from active duty, the mysterious providence which our shortsighted vision would lament is designed by God to accomplish a work that otherwise would never have been done. AA 465.1

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Paul, although still unjustly detained, was privileged to live in a home, rather than the prison in Rome. From there he preached the LORD Jesus Christ to those who freely visited him, including a company of Jews. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, gave a personal testimony of working with a senior woman who is saving her own life simply by making lifestyle changes. The saying that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks is often applied to humans. That is the attitude in the medical community and is the reason they tend to overmedicate seniors. “It is a lie,” says Pastor Flemons. The gospel can help anyone at any age change. Seniors can and do choose to die of old age, rather than from the common diseases that kill. Seniors are not necessarily set in their ways.

Words of Encouragement

Ecclesiastes 9:11  I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

James 1:6 (first part)  Bet let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“Since they themselves desired it, Paul bade them set a day when he could present to them the truths of the gospel. At the time appointed, many came together, ‘to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.’ He related his own experience, and presented arguments from the Old Testament Scriptures with simplicity, sincerity, and power. AA 451.2

“The apostle showed that religion does not consist in rites and ceremonies, creeds and theories. If it did, the natural man could understand it by investigation, as he understands worldly things. Paul taught that religion is a practical, saving energy, a principle wholly from God, a personal experience of God’s renewing power upon the soul. AA 451.3

“He showed how Moses had pointed Israel forward to Christ as that Prophet whom they were to hear; how all the prophets had testified of Him as God’s great remedy for sin, the guiltless One who was to bear the sins of the guilty. He did not find fault with their observance of forms and ceremonies, but showed that while they maintained the ritual service with great exactness, they were rejecting Him who was the antitype of all that system. AA 451.4

“Paul declared that in his unconverted state he had known Christ, not by personal acquaintance, but merely by the conception which he, in common with others, cherished concerning the character and work of the Messiah to come. He had rejected Jesus of Nazareth as an impostor because He did not fulfill this conception. But now Paul’s views of Christ and His mission were far more spiritual and exalted, for he had been converted. The apostle asserted that he did not present to them Christ after the flesh. Herod had seen Christ in the days of His humanity; Annas had seen Him; Pilate and the priests and rulers had seen Him; the Roman soldiers had seen Him. But they had not seen Him with the eye of faith; they had not seen Him as the glorified Redeemer. To apprehend Christ by faith, to have a spiritual knowledge of Him, was more to be desired than a personal acquaintance with Him as He appeared on the earth. The communion with Christ which Paul now enjoyed was more intimate, more enduring, than a mere earthly and human companionship. AA 452.1

“As Paul spoke of what he knew, and testified of what he had seen, concerning Jesus of Nazareth as the hope of Israel, those who were honestly seeking for truth were convinced. Upon some minds, at least, his words made an impression that was never effaced. But others stubbornly refused to accept the plain testimony of the Scriptures, even when presented to them by one who had the special illumination of the Holy Spirit. They could not refute his arguments, but they refused to accept his conclusions. AA 452.2

“Many months passed by after Paul’s arrival in Rome, before the Jews of Jerusalem appeared in person to present their accusations against the prisoner. They had been repeatedly thwarted in their designs; and now that Paul was to be tried before the highest tribunal of the Roman Empire, they had no desire to risk another defeat. Lysias, Felix, Festus, and Agrippa had all declared their belief in his innocence. His enemies could hope for success only in seeking by intrigue to influence the emperor in their favor. Delay would further their object, as it would afford them time to perfect and execute their plans, and so they waited for a while before preferring their charges in person against the apostle. AA 453.1

“In the providence of God this delay resulted in the furtherance of the gospel. Through the favor of those who had Paul in charge, he was permitted to dwell in a commodious house, where he could meet freely with his friends and also present the truth daily to those who came to hear. Thus for two years he continued his labors, ‘preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, [] [with] all confidence, no man forbidding him.'” AA 453.2

Words of Encouragement

Psalm 4:4  Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still.

John 10:27  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“It was on the fourteenth night of tossing on the black, heaving billows, that ‘about midnight’ the sailors, hearing the sound of breakers, ‘deemed that they drew near to some country; and sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms. Then fearing,’ Luke writes, ‘lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.’ AA 443.3

“At break of day the outlines of the stormy coast were dimly visible, but no familiar landmarks could be seen. So gloomy was the outlook that the heathen sailors, losing all courage, ‘were about to flee out of the ship,’ and feigning to make preparations for casting ‘anchors out of the foreship,’ they had already let down the lifeboat, when Paul, perceiving their base design, said to the centurion and the soldiers, ‘Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.’ The soldiers immediately ‘cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off’ into the sea. AA 443.4

The most critical hour was still before them. Again the apostle spoke words of encouragement, and entreated all, both sailors and passengers, to take some food, saying, ‘This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not a hair fall from the head of any of you.’ AA 444.1

“‘When he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.’ Then that worn and discouraged company of two hundred and seventy-five souls, who but for Paul would have become desperate, joined with the apostle in partaking of food. ‘And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.’ AA 444.2

“Daylight had now fully come, but they could see nothing by which to determine their whereabouts. However, ‘they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship. And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoisted up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore. And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the fore part stuck fast, and remained unmovable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.’ AA 444.3

“Paul and the other prisoners were now threatened by a fate more terrible than shipwreck. The soldiers saw that while endeavoring to reach land it would be impossible for them to keep their prisoners in charge. Every man would have all he could do to save himself. Yet if any of the prisoners were missing, the lives of those who were responsible for them would be forfeited. Hence the soldiers desired to put all the prisoners to death. The Roman law sanctioned this cruel policy, and the plan would have been executed at once, but for him to whom all alike were under deep obligation. Julius the centurion knew that Paul had been instrumental in saving the lives of all on board, and, moreover, convinced that the Lord was with him, he feared to do him harm. He therefore ‘commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land: and the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.’ When the roll was called, not one was missing. AA 445.1

“The shipwrecked crew were kindly received by the barbarous people of Melita. ‘They kindled a fire,’ Luke writes, ‘and received us everyone, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.’ Paul was among those who were active in ministering to the comfort of others. Having gathered ‘a bundle of sticks,’ he ‘laid them on the fire,’ when a viper came forth ‘out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.’ The bystanders were horror-stricken; and seeing by his chain that Paul was a prisoner, they said to one another, ‘No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.’ But Paul shook off the creature into the fire and felt no harm. Knowing its venomous nature, the people looked for him to fall down at any moment in terrible agony. ‘But after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.'” AA 445.2

Paul, himself, said in his second letter to the Corinthians, “For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth” (13:8). Pastor Flemons says, “If you serve God, don’t think bad things won’t happen. . . God was the anti-venom. . . People, it pays to serve God.” Paul served God on that island as a medical missionary, healing others while he, himself, was still unjustly imprisoned! That is service.

(This study is based on Acts 27; 28:1-10; and chapter 42, “The Voyage and Shipwreck” in The Acts of the Apostles (AA), by Ellen G. White.)

For Health’s Sake…

“The relation that exists between the mind and the body is very intimate. When one is affected, the other sympathizes. The condition of the mind affects the health to a far greater degree than many realize. Many of the diseases from which men suffer are the result of mental depression. Grief, anxiety, discontent, remorse, guilt, distrust, all tend to break down the life forces and to invite decay and death.

“Disease is sometimes produced, and is often greatly aggravated, by the imagination. Many are lifelong invalids who might be well if they only thought so. Many imagine that every slight exposure will cause illness, and the evil effect is produced because it is expected. Many die from disease the cause of which is wholly imaginary.

“Courage, hope, faith, sympathy, love, promote health and prolong life. A contented mind, a cheerful spirit, is health to the body and strength to the soul. ‘A merry [rejoicing] heart doeth good like a medicine.’ Proverbs 17:22.

“In the treatment of the sick the effect of mental influence should not be overlooked. Rightly used, this influence affords one of the most effective agencies for combating disease.” MH 241

Words of Encouragement

Proverbs 21:30-31  There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD. The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.

John 10:10  The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“The whole company had listened spellbound to Paul’s account of his wonderful experiences. The apostle was dwelling upon his favorite theme. None who heard him could doubt his sincerity. But in the full tide of his persuasive eloquence he was interrupted by Festus, who cried out, ‘Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.’ AA 437.2

“The apostle replied, ‘I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these thing are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.’ Then, turning to Agrippa, he addressed him directly, ‘King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.’ AA 437.3

“Deeply affected, Agrippa for the moment lost sight of his surroundings and the dignity of his position. Conscious only of the truths which he had heard, seeing only the humble prisoner standing before him as God’s ambassador, he answered involuntarily, ‘Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.’ AA 438.1

“Earnestly the apostle made answer, ‘I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am,’ adding, as he raised his fettered hands, ‘except these bonds.’ AA 438.2

“Festus, Agrippa, and Bernice might in justice have worn the fetters that bound the apostle. All were guilty of grievous crimes. These offenders had that day heard the offer of salvation through the name of Christ. One, at least, had been almost persuaded to accept the grace and pardon offered. But Agrippa put aside the proffered mercy, refusing to accept the cross of a crucified Redeemer. AA 438.3

“The king’s curiosity was satisfied, and, rising from his seat, he signified that the interview was at an end. As the assembly dispersed, they talked among themselves, saying, ‘This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.’ AA 438.4

“Though Agrippa was a Jew, he did not share the bigoted zeal and blind prejudice of the Pharisees. ‘This man,’ he said to Festus, ‘might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.’ But the case had been referred to that higher tribunal, and it was now beyond the jurisdiction of either Festus or Agrippa.” AA 438.5

For Health’s Sake…

Doctors will typically prescribe an antibiotic in each of these cases. However, nature’s antibiotic has no side effects. Oil of oregano is nature’s antibiotic. But because it is so very strong, it must be handled in this way. In a teaspoon of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, drop 2 to 3 drops of oil of oregano. Then without touching your sensitive lips, drop the oil to the back of the mouth. The sensation will be warm, but it won’t burn.

Fever baths, as discussed in detail, are excellent and strengthen the immune system. So do contrast showers. Wet throat wrap helps heal throat issues. Echinacea, red clover tea, or lung immune tea from Times of Refreshing also are great remedies for throat issues. (You must call TOR for the lung immune tea.) Another antibiotic, colloidal silver has a calming and soothing effect and can be used as a gargle. Another excellent gargle is charcoal water. But it is amazing what plain water can do when ten 8-ounce glasses of water are swallowed in one hour. Try it.

Worship: Paul Appeals to Caesar / Wellness: God’s Definition of Disease

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Paul sadly knew that he’d likely get justice with the heathen than with the prejudiced, but so-called elect of God. As a Roman citizen, Paul appealed to Caesar, rather than the Sanhedrin. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says God put restorative power in nature (not in drugs) and that sickness is simply the body’s attempt to get rid of poisons, whether by coughing, sweating, sneezing, frequent urination, or diarrhea, and yes, even tumors. Symptoms tell you the location of toxins.  (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Job 29:14  I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

Zechariah 8:13  And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong.

For Heaven’s Sake…

“Festus knew nothing of the conspiracies of the Jews to murder Paul, and he was surprised at this appeal to Caesar. However, the words of the apostle put a stop to the proceedings of the court. ‘Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.’ AA 430.3

“Thus it was that once more, because of hatred born of bigotry and self-righteousness, a servant of God was driven to turn for protection to the heathen. It was this same hatred that forced the prophet Elijah to flee for succor to the widow of Sarepta; and that forced the heralds of the gospel to turn from the Jews to proclaim their message to the Gentiles. And this hatred the people of God living in this age have yet to meet. Among many of the professing followers of Christ there is the same pride, formalism, and selfishness, the same spirit of oppression, that held so large a place in the Jewish heart. In the future, men claiming to be Christ’s representatives will take a course similar to that followed by the priests and rulers in their treatment of Christ and the apostles. In the great crisis through which they are soon to pass, the faithful servants of God will encounter the same hardness of heart, the same cruel determination, the same unyielding hatred. AA 430.4

“All who in that evil day would fearlessly serve God according to the dictates of conscience, will need courage, firmness, and a knowledge of God and His word; for those who are true to God will be persecuted, their motives will be impugned, their best efforts misinterpreted, and their names cast out as evil. Satan will work with all his deceptive power to influence the heart and becloud the understanding, to make evil appear good, and good evil. The stronger and purer the faith of God’s people, and the firmer their determination to obey Him, the more fiercely will Satan strive to stir up against them the rage of those who, while claiming to be righteous, trample upon the law of God. It will require the firmest trust, the most heroic purpose, to hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints. AA 431.1

“God desires His people to prepare for the soon-coming crisis. Prepared or unprepared, they must all meet it; and those only who have brought their lives into conformity to the divine standard, will stand firm at that time of test and trial. When secular rulers unite with ministers of religion to dictate in matters of conscience, then it will be seen who really fear and serve God. When the darkness is deepest, the light of a godlike character will shine the brightest. When every other trust fails, then it will be seen who have an abiding trust in Jehovah. And while the enemies of truth are on every side, watching the Lord’s servants for evil, God will watch over them for good. He will be to them as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” AA 431.2

For Health’s Sake…

“By the use of poisonous drugs, many bring upon themselves lifelong illness, and many lives are lost that might be saved by the use of natural methods of healing. The poisons contained in many so-called remedies create habits and appetites that mean ruin to both soul and body. Many of the popular nostrums called patent medicines, and even some of the drugs dispensed by physicians, act a part in laying the foundation of the liquor habit, the opium habit, the morphine habit, that are so terrible a curse to society.

“The only hope of better things is in the education of the people in right principles. Let physicians teach the people that restorative power is not in drugs, but in nature. Disease is an effort of nature to free the system from conditions that result from a violation of the laws of health. In case of sickness, the cause should be ascertained. Unhealthful conditions should be changed, wrong habits corrected. Then nature is to be assisted in her effort to expel impurities and to re-establish right conditions in the system.

“Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness, rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power–these are the true remedies. Every person should have a knowledge of nature’s remedial agencies and how to apply them. It is essential both to understand the principles involved in the treatment of the sick and to have a practical training that will enable one rightly to use this knowledge.” MH 126, 127
