Worship: Probation Closed for Churches / Wellness: The Health Message and the Sabbath Truth

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  You can grieve away the Holy Spirit and close your own probation. But a whole church can officially apostasize and close its probation.

Pastor Flemons noted how probation closed on the Jewish nation of believers in AD 34, which occurred exactly at the end of the 70-week prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27, but that it did not close on individual Jews. It became part of Babylon, when it made an alliance with the heathen. Next, he showed how the Early Christian Church corrupted itself, when it accepted heathen rites and customs and sought secular power. This apostasy prepared the way for it to become the Papacy. More importance was placed on the power of civil authority than on the power of God. Although not mentioned during the segment, this likely happened in or near the year AD 321, when Emperor Constantine, who had joined the Christian church and in exchange for lending his influence to validate the church, was given power to change the day of worship from the seventh-day Bible Sabbath to the first day: Sunday, the day of the sun worship. Next, the Apostate Protestant Churches sealed the end of their probation in the summer of 1844. That was the summer they rejected the angel’s message found in Revelation 14:8, when fifty thousand left their ranks. In all instances, individuals could still come out and be saved.

Finally, Pastor Flemons said that the SDA Church has received warning that it not become a sister to Babylon. He found in the prophetic writings of Ellen G. White thirteen clarifiers for not calling the SDA Church Babylon. He listed them:

  1. 1. Do not call the church Babylon that IS trying to walk in the light and is the light of the world.
  2. 2. Do not call the church Babylon that IS keeping God’s Commandments and has the faith of Jesus.
  3. 3. Do not call the church Babylon that IS not diverting souls from the true issue for this time.
  4. 4. Do not call the church Babylon that IS the only people who are fulfilling the description given of the remnant.
  5. 5. Do not call the church Babylon that IS exalting the standard of righteousness.
  6. 6. Do not call the church Babylon that IS cooperating with heavenly intelligences and instrumentalities.
  7. 7. Do not call the church Babylon that IS watching for souls as those who must give an account.
  8. 8. Do not call the church Babylon that IS promoting the glory of God among men.
  9. 9. Do not call the church Babylon that IS being built up by God.
  10. 10. Do not call the church Babylon that IS receiving the Holy Ghost.
  11. 11. Do not call the church Babylon that IS having deep movings of the Holy Ghost manifested among them.
  12. 12. Do not call the church Babylon that IS still bearing the truth.
  13. 13. Do not call the church Babylon that IS being led by God.

“The woman (Babylon) of Revelation 17 is described as ‘arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness:…and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots.’ Says the prophet: ‘I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.’ Babylon is further declared to be ‘that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.’ Revelation 17:4-6, 18. The power that for so many centuries maintained despotic sway over the monarchs of Christendom is Rome. The purple and scarlet color, the gold and precious stones and pearls, vividly picture the magnificence and more than kingly pomp affected by the haughty see of Rome. And no other power could be so truly declared ‘drunken with the blood of the saints’ as that church which has so cruelly persecuted the followers of Christ. Babylon is also charged with the sin of unlawful connection with ‘the kings of the earth.’ It was by departure from the Lord, and alliance with the heathen, that the Jewish church became a harlot; and Rome, corrupting herself in like manner by seeking the support of worldly powers, receives a like condemnation. {GC 382.2}

“Babylon is said to be ‘the mother of harlots.’ By her daughters must be symbolized churches that cling to her doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacrificing the truth and the approval of God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with the world. The message of Revelation 14, announcing the fall of Babylon must apply to religious bodies that were once pure and have become corrupt. Since this message follows the warning of the judgment, it must be given in the last days; therefore it cannot refer to the Roman Church alone, for that church has been in a fallen condition for many centuries. . . . {GC 382.3}

Pastor Flemons’s conclusion is this: “Just as with the Jewish Church, the early Christian churches, and the Protestant churches, when probation closes for the SDA corporate church, it will still be possible for individual Seventh-day Adventists who have not grieved the Holy Spirit to be saved.” Our only safety says Pastor Flemons is in being stedfast, holding on, and standing for the truth.

Worship: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, discussed the health message relative to the Sabbath message. In doing so, he gave a personal testimony. He said that within one week the health message, with its amazingly visible results, opened a door to spiritual growth for his special health guest.

The Sabbath provided the opportunity to make special and delightful adjustments to the regimen. It also prompted questions and discussion, which led to further truth and paved the way for acceptance of even deeper truths.

Pastor Flemons noted how this is a direct reflection of the method of Jesus, who first showed His sympathy, ministered to the needs of people, won their confidence, and then bade them to follow Him. “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good.” MH 143.3
