Worship: For Heaven’s Sake Polygamy surrounded the camp of Abraham and had become so widespread that it had ceased to be regarded as sin. His wife, Sarah, had become old and impatient. The promised son had not been born. She, therefore, suggested that her husband Abraham take another woman to provide a son for their family and so fulfill God’s promise. Obeying his wife, rather than waiting on God, Abraham married Hagar. (Read more below.)
Wellness: For Health’s Sake Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, continued discussing diseases of the digestive system. We learned what diverticulosis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, polyps and liver cirrhosis are and how they develop. (Read more below.)

For Heaven’s Sake…
As would be expected, problems loomed from the unholy arrangement. Sarah became jealously harsh toward her maid Hagar. And Hagar fled. But God spoke to Hagar to return. And she did.
Then, Ishmael was born. And finally as promised, a son was born to Abraham and Sarah. Isaac’s birth unsettled the arrangement even further. Jealousy led to Hagar having to permanently leave with Ishmael. But the permanent separation did not bring permanent peace. Even today, these two sons’ descendants continue to fight over inherited property rights in Israel. As such, they have provided a signal reason for preserving the sacredness of marital ties to one person that should never be shared with another. In this, Abraham was tested. And he failed.
He was tested again. Abraham was told to sacrifice his only son. Isaac was to be killed as an offering to God. This same Isaac was the inheritor of the promised blessing! How could he be sacrificed and still receive the promised blessing? But Abraham had learned a severe lesson from not trusting God.
This time, Abraham fully trusted God. And Isaac willingly submitted to God’s request, as well. He had been trained all of his life to trust and obey his father. They both submitted to the strange request. By God’s grace, it turned out to only be a test of faithfulness. God intervened.
Isaac and Abraham were saved from the bloody experience. However, God had to let His own Son be sacrificed with no stay of anyone’s hand. And that sacrifice was completed for sinners, people whose lives showed no appreciation of the tremendous sacrifice.
For Health’s Sake…
Diverticulosis happens when there is a low fiber diet. Therefore, the colon must exert much more pressure to move the food forward. This weakens the colon wall and pockets develop. These pockets bulge out like the weak thin areas of a blown-up balloon. There are no symptoms, until pieces of food settle into the pockets and cause infection, rather diverticulitis. Fever and severe pain in the colon are the result.
Pancreatitis happens when the powerful protoenzymes remain in the pancreas too long, because of obstruction, like gallstones. They aren’t flowing out as normal and become activated before being released into the small intestine. Instead of digesting particles of food, they begin to digest the pancreas itself. The pancreas then becomes inflamed, causing severe pain. It is a difficult condition to medically treat, as medicines that help one function of the pancreas harm the other.
The liver becomes cirrhotic, particularly from the abuse of alcohol and drugs. The efforts of the body to repair the repeated damage causes the buildup of scar tissue and further impairs its functions. Multiple symptoms result, because the liver has so many different functions. A damaged liver cannot properly manufacture blood. It cannot protect the immune system; so the immune system is weakened. And proper digestion is hindered as well.
Colon polyps are a collection of cells that develop in the colon wall. They are considered harmless, but over time they can become cancerous. Normally, they are surgically removed. However, a fibrous diet without animal products can prevent them from developing.
