Worship: Perfecting Holiness / Wellness: Health in the New Testament

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  There is a science to victory over sin and perfecting holiness. As we submit our wills to God’s will, we are empowered by His Holy Spirit to draw close to God, to guard the avenues of our soul, to win Heaven. “Expulsion of sin is the act of the soul itself,” says Pastor Flemons, who quoted from Ellen White’s Desire of Ages (p. 466.4).

We are on the brink of the real Canaan. And like the Israelites on the brink of Canaan, sins of licentiousness and those of freely indulging the passions will be order of the day, unless we make decided efforts to yield our wills to God and participate in our own salvation and the salvation of others.

“Indulgence of appetite is the greatest cause of physical and mental debility, and lies at the foundation of a large share of the feebleness which is apparent everywhere. {CTBH 154.1}
“The controlling power of appetite will prove the ruin of thousands, who, if they had conquered on this point, would have had the moral power to gain the victory over every other temptation. But those who are slaves to appetite will fail of perfecting Christian character. The continual transgression of man for over six thousand years has brought sickness, pain, and death as its fruit. And as we draw near the close of time, Satan’s temptations to indulge appetite will be more powerful, and more difficult to resist. {CTBH 154.2}”
“The only safe course is to touch not, taste not, handle not, tea, coffee, wines, tobacco, opium, and alcoholic drinks. . . . {3T 488.1} The great end for which Christ endured that long fast in the wilderness was to teach us the necessity of self-denial and temperance. This work should commence at our tables and should be strictly carried out in all the concerns of life. The Redeemer of the world came from heaven to help man in his weakness, that, in the power which Jesus came to bring him, he might become strong to overcome appetite and passion, and might be victor on every point. {3T 488.2}

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, showed how the same dietary principles in the Old Testament were essentially repeated in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul puts it very succinctly. He says that whatever we do, even when we are eating and drinking, it must be done to honor and glorify God. (Read 1 Corinthians 10:31.)

“If we eat what is known to kill us,” says Pastor Flemons, “how can we be eating to the glory of God?” The Bible links prosperity to wealth in 3 John 1:2. Instead, the world links prosperity to financial wealth. Pastor Flemons told how the world’s wealthiest have been used by Satan to deceive the world with the witchery or sorcery of pharmaceutical drugs. It was prophesied in Revelation 18:23. They, meaning pharmaceutical drugs, trick the body.  They target only the symptoms of disease. They don’t heal your body. They don’t rid the body of the toxins that are the cause of disease. He recommends watching  the video, “The Truth About Cancer,” available on YouTube, which provides a bit of history of pharmaceutics in America.

To eat, drink and do everything to the glory of God requires strict discipline. Christians especially must exercise self-denial and discipline. We all understand that when it comes to winning awards in the Olympics. But what about eternal life? Isn’t winning eternity of much more value than winning the gold of Olympians? Of course it is.

Words of Encouragement

John 3:9-12  Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? (Also read the devotional book, Ye Shall Receive Power, YRP 323.)

Psalm 24:3, 4  Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. (Also read My Life Today, ML 72.)
