Worship: Sabbath and the Name of God / Wellness: Dangers of Fizzy Drinks

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Pastor Flemons began by quoting Early Writings p. 33 as saying, “The Sabbath was set apart to be kept in honor of God’s holy name.” As name represents character according to Exodus 33:18 and Ex. 34:6,7, Pastor Flemons reminded us that the Sabbath was set apart in honor of God’s character. “Therefore, we are breaking the Sabbath when we exhibit an unchristlike character Sunday through Friday,” says Pastor Flemons. He supported the name – character connection by showing that when character changed, the name of the person or angel often changed. Examples sited were Lucifer (the light-bearer) being changed to Satan (the adversary).  He also mentioned Abram being renamed Abraham and Jacob (the supplanter) being renamed Israel (one who prevailed with God).

Because the Sabbath declares the name of God as “Creator,” Satan has attacked the Sabbath. In his quest to be “like the Most High” according to Isa. 14:14, the devil cannot deny that He is a created being and is thus unlike the Most High.  He would like us to forget that fact so the very commandment that reminds us, he is trying to blot out of our memory.

Worship: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, read from an article in The Telegraph entitled, “11 Reasons To Renounce Your Fizzy Drink Habit”  The article shared some studies and science that shows the dangers of drinking carbonated beverages loaded with sugar and some with caffeine. Pastor Flemons noted that a lot of the dangers come from the sugar and caffeine. However, he noted that carbonated beverages are high in phosphoric acid, which makes the pH more acidic and tends to leach calcium out of the bones leading to arthritis, osteoporosis, and other conditions. The 11 reasons listed in the article are as follows:

  1. Increased risk of cancer
  2. Increased risk of heart disease
  3. Increased risk of developing diabetes
  4. Increased risk of liver damage
  5. Increased risk of becoming violent
  6. Increased risk of premature birth in pregnancy
  7. Causes negative changes in the brain
  8. Causes premature aging
  9. Causes early puberty
  10. Increase risk of obesity
  11. Increased risk of Alzheimers
