Worship: Sword of the Spirit / Wellness: Curing Sore Throats

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. The word of God is the entire Bible: the Old Testament, as well as the New Testament, from Genesis to Revelation. Jesus, our perfect Example, read only the Old Testament. The New Testament was not written yet, for it is His story. And His story must necessarily include the Old Testament, by which He said, “It is written,” as He did battle with Satan. (Read Luke 4.) The Old Testament today still mandates our diet and lifestyle, proclaims God’s Ten Commandments, and interprets prophecy for us today.

One part of the Bible is no more or less inspired than the other. Therefore, our doctrine must be based upon the entire body of Scripture, not just the part that pleases us, says Pastor Flemons. To neglect or reject any part of it is done to our own hurt or demise before time. The whole Bible is safe to trust. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17).

As part of the whole armor of God, the Bible is a two-edged sword that cuts to heal, not only the receiver but the handler. As the receiver is convicted of truth, strengthened, and encouraged in righteousness, so is the handler. In fact, two primary scriptures  (2 Corinthians 7:1 and 2 Peter 1:4 ) tell of the Bible’s ability to perfect our characters. Particularly, the promises found in God’s word cleanses from all filthiness and perfects holiness. By these precious promises in the Word of God, we become partakers of God’s divine nature.

[For additional details, please read Ephesians 6:10-17; 2 Timothy 3:16, 17; Luke 4; 1 Corinthians 10:31; Ecclesiastes 7:17; Matthew 5:48; John 17:17; Hebrews 4:12. Also, listen to the recording to hear the commentary of Pastor Flemons, who sang Hymn 272, “Give Me the Bible.”]

Worship: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says that sore throats aren’t always as a result of cold weather. They can be the result of several things, including constipation and dehydration. First, make sure that you aren’t constipated. If you are, take care of that first. And he offered natural remedies for keeping the channels of elimination open. But he says staying true to healthy lifestyle is even better than taking remedies.

Healthy lifestyle habits include making sure that you are drinking enough water daily, that you are getting to bed on time, that you are eating a plant-based diet, not eating too much, and are not drinking with your meals or going to bed on a full stomach. This helps keep your immune system strong, which is the key.

If you need additional help getting over a sore throat, Pastor Flemons offered some natural solutions. First, help your body’s immune response of getting white blood cells to the affected area. You do this by wrapping your throat in a cold, wet cotton sock at bedtime. Over the sock, wrap plastic. Saran wrap is fine. Then wrap a wool scarf around the plastic. Just avoid a draft. By the morning, the sock will be warm, and your sore throat will feel better.

Other simpler things you can do is gargle with goldenseal, take echinacea tea, take Rocket Fuel, drink more lemon water, and include more fresh garlic in your diet. Pastor Flemons says warm salt water is good as well. He then gave instruction for doing contrast showers, which he does not advise for the elderly, unless they modify the temperatures so that they are not extremely hot or cold.

Words of Encouragement

Job 12:7-9  But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the Lord hath wrought this? (Also read Conflict and Courage, CC 19.)

Psalm 27:8  When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, Lord, will I seek. (Also read With God at Dawn, WGD 15.)
