Worship: The Character and Aims of the Papacy, Pt 8 / Wellness: The Spirit in Your Bedroom

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake Your external display may only reveal your inward deficiency, whether it is personal or that of an organization or denomination.

“This outward splendor, pomp, and ceremony, that only mocks the longings of the sin-sick soul, is an evidence of inward corruption. The religion of Christ needs not such attractions to recommend it. In the light shining from the cross, true Christianity appears so pure and lovely that no external decorations can enhance its true worth. It is the beauty of holiness, a meek and quiet spirit, which is of value with God. {GC88 566.3}

“Brilliancy of style is not necessarily an index of pure, elevated thought. High conceptions of art, delicate refinement of taste, often exist in minds that are earthly and sensual. They are often employed by Satan to lead men to forget the necessities of the soul, to lose sight of the future, immortal life, to turn away from their infinite Helper, and to live for this world alone.  {GC88 566.4}

“A religion of externals is attractive to the unrenewed heart. The pomp and ceremony of the Catholic worship have a seductive, bewitching power, by which many are deceived; and they come to look upon the Roman Church as the very gate of Heaven. None but those who have planted their feet firmly upon the foundation of truth, and whose hearts are renewed by the Spirit of God, are proof against her influence. Thousands who have not an experimental knowledge of Christ will be led to accept the forms of godliness without the power. Such a religion is just what the multitudes desire. {GC88 567.1}

But “The Spirit of God,” says Pastor Flemons, “is not in such manifestations.” You may feel more holy, but you are not. It is far better to walk with God in quiet communion.

[For further details, read Ellen G. White’s 1888 edition of The Great Controversy, Chapter 35: “The Character and Aims of the Papacy,” GC88 563 and GC88 566 and 567 (for today); 2 Timothy 3:1-5. Also, listen to the recording to hear the commentary of Pastor Flemons, who sang Hymn 495, “Near to the Heart of God.”]

Wellness: For Health’s Sake Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says that the spirit in your bedroom may keep you from sleeping. When you are preparing to sleep, go peacefully. Don’t argue. Don’t watch TV. Don’t do anything that would invite an evil and restless spirit into your bedroom.

Sharing and Caring Time Sis. Maria encouraged listeners with a reading from Chapter 14, “Prayer and Reverence,” in the book Power of Prayer, a compilation of Ellen G. White’s statements on prayer. Today’s selected statements came from page 33 and in part included these: “True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His presence;” and “All true obedience comes from the heart.” (Also read Leviticus 19:30.)

Pastor Flemons will be speaking at the Walnut Church of SDA, 8501 Hwy 25, Marshall, NC 28753. Two services are scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, the Sabbath, June 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Special Prayer  Please include in your prayers today Listener 5514, who asks that we continue to pray for the Minor family. They recently relocated from Maryland to the Atlanta area. Also pray for employment, as interviews are going. Pray for her brother Thomas Williams who is mending from a torn muscle in his back.

Please keep Pastor and Sis. Maria in prayer as they travel to Asheville, NC, today and Sis. Odessa, as she travels to Selma, Alabama.

Sis. Jennifer has asked that we pray for a 21-year-old widow (Omelia) whose husband was witness to a murder case, but was gunned down with 22 bullets. Left is his young family, including an unborn child, who is now struggling in so many ways. Prayers and financial offerings are welcome. Send contributions to this ministry and mark it for Omelia.

Please pray for the Hoilette family, who is grieving the loss of Sis. Gloria Elaine Hoilette, wife of Dr. Newton Hoilette, pastor of the Lehigh Acres SDA Church in Florida.

Pray for Sis. Eunice, and remember the unspoken prayer requests of each heart.
