For Heaven’s Sake…
For three days they traveled through the wilderness without water. When they finally reached a reservoir of water, it was bitter. The complaints soared. But God was testing them. Trials form the basis for faith in God. And this was no different. Soon they learned that God could make bitter water sweet and bring water from a rock. His power has no limitations. They needed to personally experience extremities to know God’s limitless abilities.
Because they had been in slavery for so long, they had not practiced real Sabbath keeping probably for several lifetimes. And they were ill prepared to provide daily meals for themselves throughout the extended wilderness journey. God, therefore miraculously fed them manna in the wilderness. Using their daily food supply, God demonstrated the sacredness of the Sabbath.
It was a daily miracle of manna, with one exception: the Sabbath. That is, every morning manna appeared just after the dew disappeared. It was like frost: small and round. It was white like coriander seed. And it tasted like a honey wafer. Moses called it bread.
It had to be gathered daily before the sun waxed hot, or it would melt away. It could be baked or stewed. And it had to be completely consumed in the same day. Any left over to the next day would spoil. It would breed worms and stink.
This was not so for the day of preparation, however. On the sixth day, Fridays, they were instructed to gather twice as much and prepare it for that day and the next. Miraculously, the manna remained fresh for consumption on the Sabbath day. Just as miraculous was the fact that on Sabbath mornings, the dew left no manna.
Sadly it seemed no miracle could keep these human beings from murmuring against God. Sadly, they had to learn the hard way. They had to endure war. They had to learn the hard way how to be humble. They had to learn the value of constant communion with God.
“God had promised to be their God, to take them to Himself as a people, and to lead them to a large and good land; but they were ready to faint at every obstacle encountered in the way to that land. In a marvelous manner He had brought them out from their bondage in Egypt, that He might elevate and ennoble them and make them a praise in the earth. But it was necessary for them to encounter difficulties and to endure privations. God was bringing them from a state of degradation and fitting them to occupy an honorable place among the nations and to receive important and sacred trusts. Had they possessed faith in Him, in view of all that He had wrought for them, they would cheerfully have borne inconvenience, privation, and even real suffering; but they were unwilling to trust the Lord any further than they could witness the continual evidences of His power. They forgot their bitter service in Egypt. They forgot the goodness and power of God displayed in their behalf in their deliverance from bondage. They forgot how their children had been spared when the destroying angel slew all the first-born of Egypt. They forgot the grand exhibition of divine power at the Red Sea. They forgot that while they had crossed safely in the path that had been opened for them, the armies of their enemies, attempting to follow them, had been overwhelmed by the waters of the sea. They saw and felt only their present inconveniences and trials; and instead of saying, “God has done great things for us; whereas we were slaves, He is making of us a great nation,” they talked of the hardness of the way, and wondered when their weary pilgrimage would end.PP 292.3
“The history of the wilderness life of Israel was chronicled for the benefit of the Israel of God to the close of time. The record of God’s dealings with the wanderers of the desert in all their marchings to and fro, in their exposure to hunger, thirst, and weariness, and in the striking manifestations of His power for their relief, is fraught with warning and instruction for His people in all ages. The varied experience of the Hebrews was a school of preparation for their promised home in Canaan. God would have His people in these days review with a humble heart and teachable spirit the trials through which ancient Israel passed, that they may be instructed in their preparation for the heavenly Canaan.PP 293.1″

For Health’s Sake…
God has provided in nature the answer to constipation: water and slippery elm. Water, alone, is essential to regularity. Without it, constipation will be a personal experience. Dehydration is often at the source of constipation. Because constipation is the mother of all diseases, it must be promptly eliminated. Slippery elm can help. It is soothing and will coat and soften the stool. Water and slippery elm can be mixed, using 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of slippery elm to 4 to 6 ounces of water.
Peristalsis must be activated. During constipation, it has been paralyzed. But it is through peristalsis that food moves through the digestive tract, which winds and twines like a roller coaster. Peristalsis, then, must be activated. But you must be careful.
Cascara segrada, which literally means sacred bark, is the safest to use. “The jury is still out on whether cascara sagrada is habit forming.” says Pastor Flemons. It is one of the most bitter herbs you can take. Adding stevia to it makes it palatable. It can also be taken in capsules.
It has been specially formulated in TOR’s colon cleanse so that the bitterness of cascara sagrada is not tasted. “But really, we want you to change your lifestyle,” says Pastor Flemons,” so that you are not dependent on even our colon cleanse.” Lifestyle is the most important thing.
Until then, herbs are the way to go for help when constipated. Besides cascara sagrada, senna and mandrake are nature’s prune juice, which is itself also an excellent booster for peristalsis. But use all of these sparingly.
First and foremost, eat a diet high in fiber. To help with fiber, take psyllium in a little water. Drink it immediately. It quickly gels with liquids and can become nearly impossible to swallow. Another excellent source of fiber is flaxseed powder, which can be sprinkled on foods. Refrigerate it between uses.
If you are really in a situation and need immediate help and cannot get to herbs, there is an over-the-counter answer. As far as we know magnesium citrate is safe. It comes in a 6- or 8-oz bottle. Just drink it down. Magnesium citrate pulls water into the colon to help flush out the waste matter. It is a non-irritating formula, which can be purchased in most major local stores.
Lifestyle, however, is best. Rely on God for ridding your life of stress, which immediately halts peristalsis. Eat a diet high in fiber, like fruits and vegetables, and avoid eating the flesh of dead animals and dairy, which have no fiber, whatsoever. Exercise in fresh air helps peristalsis. These are the basics of maintaining healthy and regular bowels and avoiding constipation.
