Worship: Dress, Index to the Heart / Wellness: Bugleweed and Cabbage Juice for Hyperthyroidism

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Dress reform (presented in its own mini-series) follows talks by Pastor Flemons on a number of reforms instituted after 1798, when the Dark Ages ended. These reforms include the Bible, the Spirit of Prophecy, the Sanctuary, the Sabbath, Worship, Country Living, as well as Financial, Education, Home, Prophetic, Faith, Unity, and Health reforms in his series “Preparation for the Final Crisis,” which he says is “preparation for Heaven.”

In the book Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, written by Ellen G. White, the subject of dress required a full chapter. Pastor Flemons read the final segment of it, including the following selected statements:

“The outside appearance is an index to the heart. True refinement does not find satisfaction in the adorning of the body for display. A modest, godly woman will dress modestly. Simplicity of apparel always makes a sensible woman appear to the best advantage. A refined, cultured mind will be revealed in the choice of simple and appropriate attire. In the sanctified heart there is no place for thoughts of needless adornment. {CTBH 93.1}

“The apostles thus describe the adornment that should be sought by Christians: ‘Whose adorning, let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.’ [1 Peter 3:3.] ‘In like manner, also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broidered hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.” [1 Timothy 2:9.] Pride and extravagance in dress are sins to which woman is especially prone; hence these injunctions relate directly to her. {CTBH 93.3}

[For additional details, please read Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene, by Ellen G. White, Chapter 10 “Dress,” particularly, pp 92.1-95.2 (CTBH 92) and listen to the recording to hear the commentary of Pastor Flemons, who sang Hymn 316, “Live Out Thy Life Within Me.”]

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says that a hyperthyroid is not as common as hypothyroid, which manifests itself in slow heart rates. With hyperthyroidism, the heart flutters at a fast pace. The thyroid, as you may see, is the body’s metabolism regulator.

In either case, says Pastor Flemons, the system needs to be cleansed. The choice of vegetables to be juiced, however, must suit the need. The main juice to use for hyperthyroidism should be cabbage. Cruciferous vegetables, he says, slow down the metabolism. Therefore, those with hypothyroidism must “back off” from cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables, which include broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, and collards.

Help for hyperthyroidism include the herbs bugleweed and motherwort, which specifically slows the metabolism and heart rate. Therefore, these herbs are ones to be avoided by those with hypothyroidism.

According to Wikipedia, “Signs and symptoms [of hyperthyroidism] vary between people and may include irritability, muscle weakness, sleeping problems, a fast heartbeat, heat intolerance, diarrhea, enlargement of the thyroid, hand tremor, and weight loss.[1] Symptoms are typically less in the old and during pregnancy.[1]
