On the very housetop where David lusted after Bathsheba, He was humiliated as his son, Absalom violated all his concubines. David had been told by the prophet Nathan that though we did his evil deed in secret, it would be done to him in the open. Nonetheless, David also suffered wrongfully as Shemei, a relative of Saul, cursed him for no good reason. He along with Ahithophel harbored bitterness against David. Ahithophel was related to Bathsheba and was bitter about the shame brought on the family and Shemei was bitter because he could no longer enjoy the praise and attention that came from being a relative of King Saul. These men were evil at heart and hurt David for no reason. Therefore, sometimes our suffering is a consequence of our own sin. Other times, our suffering is the result of persecution for righteousness sake.
