For Heaven’s Sake…
The Jews were “to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy” (Daniel 9:24). “This was a time prophecy that gave the Jews a long period of probation so that they could fulfill God’s law and His mission to usher in the Savior of the world. Unfortunately, because they succumbed to the power of tradition, they murdered the Savior they were supposed to inaugurate.” HCFL 277
The key to interpreting prophetic time, as stated previously, is that one day equals one year. Applying the time principle to 70 weeks, the result is 490 prophetic days or literal years. And as we previously learned, the prophecy began in 457 BC. This means the 70-week prophecy would end in the year AD 34: the very year Stephen was stoned and the gospel message was carried to the Gentiles.
According to that same prophetic timeline, the first 483 literal years would point to the year that Messiah the Prince, the Most Holy, would be anointed. Verse 25 of Daniel 9 tallies the 483 in seven weeks and three score and two weeks. Seven weeks are 49 days. Three score weeks are 420 days, and two weeks are 14 days. (Remember that one score is 20.) Jesus Christ of Nazareth was baptized and immediately anointed by the Holy Spirit in AD 27, exactly 483 years into the 2300-day prophecy. (Read Matthew 3:13-17.)
This gives us 69 weeks with one week (or seven years) left of the 70-week prophecy. Verses 26 and 27 declare that after the 69 weeks, the Messiah would “be cut off, but not for himself.” Christians understand that Jesus died for the sins of the world and not for any of His own; for He was sinless, innocent of any crime. The amazing fact is that AD 27 (the year of Christ’s baptism and anointing) to AD 34 (the year Stephen was stoned) is one prophetic week or seven literal years.
In the “midst of the week, he (meaning the Messiah) would cause the sacrifice and oblation to cease.” In AD 31, 3 1/2 years into and exactly half of the one prophetic week, Jesus was crucified. When Jesus died on the cross, “the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom; and the earth quaked and the rocks were split” (Matthew 27:50, 51).
The torn veil and earthquake interrupted and caused the Passover ministrations to cease as prophesied. The priests had wanted Jesus out of the way, because they wanted to get on with the evening Passover. (Read Leviticus 23:5 and John 19:13-15.) This sacrificial system “required that lambs and other animals be killed, until the death of the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. . . . Once the real Lamb of God died, it would be sacrilegious to continue sacrificing animals. Jesus was crucified in AD 31, just 3 1/2 years after His baptism [and anointing]. . . . Prophecy is again authenticated.” HCFL 280
Since then, the “favor that heaven bestowed [previously only on Jews] has now moved to Christians who allow Christ to rule in their hearts.” (HCFL 280) Nevertheless, Jews have not been excluded. They and anyone else can “have the same privileges . . . to be saved, if they accept Jesus as their personal Savior.” HCFL 281
