Worship: For Heaven’s Sake Some decisions are simple. To turn right is right, but to turn left is wrong. Other times, decisions are not as clear. To go right is right, but to go left is also right. That can be confusing, and even paralyzing. Pastor Flemons discusses this dilemma in general decision making and he provides three steps for knowing your calling. (Read more below.)
Wellness: For Health’s Sake Cholesterol is your body’s natural bandage. The liver manufactures it. “Our body makes all the cholesterol we need,” says Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy. But he says cholesterol production is increased, even overproduced, when you are too stressed and when you consume too much sugar. That is what you need to consider and adjust, if you are already on a plant-based diet and you are told your cholesterol is too high. Beyond that, problematic excess cholesterol comes from eating animal meats and their byproducts, such as dairy and eggs.

For Heaven’s Sake…
As a much younger man Pastor Flemons faced the dilemma of knowing God’s will for his life. He was led to the book Education. He read it cover to cover and found it to be inspirational and straight from the Bible. It includes this life-changing statement:
We need to follow more closely God’s plan of life. To do our best in the work that lies nearest, to commit our ways to God, and to watch for the indications of His providence—these are rules that ensure safe guidance in the choice of an occupation. {Ed 267.3} (Ellen G. White, Education, p. 267.3)
“Live your life by these three principles,” says Pastor Flemons. And he provided the scriptural basis for each one of the rules as he discussed them.
- 1. Do your best with the work that lies nearest. Ecclesiastes 9:10 reads, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” When you do this, you will look for opportunities and ways to improve the company or organization without overworking or stressing. Stay with it, allowing your gifts to to prosper you, often right where you are. Proverbs 18:16 reads, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.”
2. Commit your way to God. Psalm 37:5 reads, “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” Commit your gift, your education (or your debt or whatever) to God and ask for His help and guidance. You cannot lose with Him. “God always wins in the end,” Pastor Flemons says. And he warns that “if it’s not looking like He’s winning to you, it’s just not the end.”
3. Watch for indications of Providence. Isaiah 30:21 reads, “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” At this point, Pastor Flemons opened the phone lines to discuss whether you first hear God’s voice and move in a certain direction, or you move first and then listen for His voice.
It was determined to do both. Listen for direction and move in it. Once you move, then listen again for confirmation.
In other words, pray first. Then listen. Watch for indications of Providence. “Providence is the opening and the closing of doors of opportunities,” says Pastor Flemons. We are to watch for indications of the opening or closing of doors. Things can happen in such a way that you know God is leading or is in control of your life. That’s confirmation.
Stepping in a direction without full commitment and watching for doors to open with wider opportunity for growth is a way to test the waters, Pastor Flemons encouraged. But be prepared to turn around, if Providence confirms that you need to stop at this point and continue no further.
Although this advice is most advantageous for the young adult, “many don’t even reach their calling until later on in life,” says Pastor Flemons. The devil has thrown many distractions in our way. And God sometimes has to allow us to be thrown into full dependence on Him, before we realize our calling.
