Worship: Sabbath Myths / Wellness: Beer, A Fitness Motivator?

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  At least thirteen myths exist about the Sabbath. Using the Bible, Pastor Flemons discussed five of them today. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  When you know what the Bible says about alcohol and what it really does in the body, then you will likely ask How in the world can anyone conclude that drinking beer is advisable under any circumstance. Two CNN articles clash in amazing advise about beer. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Matthew 7:29  For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Psalm 91:5-6  Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;  Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

For Heaven’s Sake…

MYTH #1, Sabbath began with the Jews.

MYTH #2, Sabbath began when GOD gave law at Sinai.

MYTH #3, God wanted us to forget about the Sabbath day.

MYTH #4, Sabbath has nothing to do with sanctification.

MYTH #5, Jesus did away with the Ten Commandments.

MYTH #1, Sabbath began with the Jews.

Genesis 2:1-3, Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Clearly, the Sabbath began the week of creation. God rested on the seventh day. God blessed the seventh day. God sanctified the seventh day. No man can change that which God has blessed and sanctified.

MYTH #2, Sabbath began when GOD gave the law at Sinai.

Exodus 16:21-26 And they gathered it [manna] every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm herein. And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto to the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field. Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

Clearly, the Sabbath was being observed in this passage. The LORD miraculously preserved the manna, which had to be prepared on the sixth day for eating on the Sabbath day in which no preparation was allowed. During the weekday, the manna would easily spoil. The timing of this passage was prior to their arrival at Mount Sinai, where the Ten Commandments were written with the finger of God and delivered by Moses to the people on two tables of stone.

MYTH #3, God wanted us to forget about the Sabbath day.

Exodus 20:8  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Clearly, God wants us to remember the Sabbath day. He commands us to remember it. It is the first word of the fourth commandment. It is the only commandment that begins with the word remember. It is the only commandment that Protestant Christians officially do not keep.

MYTH #4, Sabbath has nothing to do with sanctification.

Exodus 31:13  Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Ezekiel 20:12  Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.

Clearly God links sanctification with the Sabbath. Sanctification involves receiving from God a new heart and a right spirit as explained in Ezekiel 36:26 and Psalm 51:10. It is the creative power of God in lives of those who belong to Him. When we reject the Sabbath, God’s sign of sanctification, we reject God himself. As God sanctifies us all week long, we can truly honor Him and celebrate His keeping and creative power on the Sabbath, according to the commandment.

MYTH #5,  Jesus did away with the Ten Commandments.

Matthew 5:17  Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Luke 4:16  And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Luke 18:18-21  And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.

Clearly, Jesus did not come to destroy the Ten Commandments. Clearly, Jesus worshipped on the seventh day. Clearly the rich young ruler was not really a commandment keeper, as he supposed. When Jesus told hi to give up the riches, which had become his god, he went away sorrowful.

In fact, Jesus said that if we really love Him, we will keep, not ignore, His commandments (John 14:15). He expected the Sabbath to be kept after His resurrection, as shown in His prediction of the fall of Jerusalem. He said, “pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day” (Matthew 24:20). Clearly, this means that the weekly Sabbath, along with the rest of the Ten Commandments were not done away with. In fact, they are still to be kept as evidence of our love for Him.

For Health’s Sake…

One article advises exercising after drinking alcohol to minimize the deadly risks of alcohol consumption. Another article advises drinking beer after exercising to motivate you to stick to your resolution to exercise. Not surprising, the exercise class is held in a brewery. Afterward, participants stick around for a beer.

Susan Scutti’s September 8 article begins this way:

“You might want to chase that next beer with a little exercise. Exercising the recommended amount “cancels out” the higher risk of cancer death brought about by drinking, a new study revealed. Similarly, physical activity lessened any greater risk of death resulting from any cause due to alcohol.”

Jen Christensen’s January 6 article (released as new year resolutions were being made) reveals, “Some studies have even looked at beer as an alternative kind of sports drink (the nutrients in the hops and the sugar can work if sodium is added and the alcohol content is lower).”

It continues with this: “While one study did show that alcohol consumption after exercise can slow recovery, the pluses may outweigh the minuses. Although research on the motivators behind why people who drink tend to exercise more is a little more limited.”

These are perfect examples why it is important to know what the Bible says and follow the word of God, says Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy.

He says, alcohol, in any form, is toxic to the system. It is poison. There is no need to drink wine or stronger alcoholic beverage for any minuscule benefit they are said to provide.
