Worship: The Poor in Spirit / Wellness: The Effects of Going to Bed Too Late

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  The Beatitudes help us understand what should be our attitudes, says Pastor Flemons. When our attitudes are right, we can receive the blessings of the LORD. First, we should be poor in spirit. But that doesn’t mean we are without or don’t have enough of the Holy Spirit, says Pastor Flemons. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Habitually going to bed late costs you more than lost sleep. Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy, explains the ill effects of going to bed too late. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Psalm 118:5  I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.

Isaiah 40:31  But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

For Heaven’s Sake…

It simply means that we recognize our need–that we have a deficiency. We must sense a need of God’s blessings in order for God to be able to bless us. We can’t be proud or full of pride. We must humble ourselves in order for God to lift us up (James 4:10; 1 Peter 5:6). If we don’t humble ourselves, says Pastor Flemons, we will be humbled. God will humble us. God loves us that much. It is only in humility that we can be in position to claim ownership in the kingdom of heaven. The kingdom of heaven is what God wants for us.

Matthew 5:3  Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Pastor Flemons shared an inspired commentary on this verse. In the book Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, Ellen G. White explains it this way:

“All who have a sense of their deep soul poverty, who feel that they have nothing good in themselves, may find righteousness and strength by looking unto Jesus. He says, “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden.” Matthew 11:28. He bids you exchange your poverty for the riches of His grace. We are not worthy of God’s love, but Christ, our surety, is worthy, and is abundantly able to save all who shall come unto Him. Whatever may have been your past experience, however discouraging your present circumstances, if you will come to Jesus just as you are, weak, helpless, and despairing, our compassionate Saviour will meet you a great way off, and will throw about you His arms of love and His robe of righteousness.” (MB 8.2)

For Health’s Sake…

Regularly losing sleep weakens your immune system. You are at greater risk of succumbing to disease. It is during the hours of sleep that the immune system repairs itself. If you don’t get the required amount of sleep, it suffers. That is why you may notice having the sniffles first thing in the morning.

Surprisingly, your digestion is hindered when you are sleep deprived. Digestion requires energy that gets burned up by late working or doing other things, which tend to be associated with late eating.

Nervousness is increased as a result of poor sleep habits. Your nervous system requires rest to remain healthy and calm. When you are sleep deprived, the nervous system is stressed and you are at risk for such conditions as neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, and other problems.

Hormones are thrown out of balance because of lack of rest. This can be a huge problem.

Practically speaking, you can be late for work, which affects your income, of course.

Losing sleep occasionally is not what is being considered here. There are times when emergencies call for a late night or two. But habitually going to bed later than 9:30 at the latest can put you into an early grave.
