Worship: Mourning Blessings / Wellness: Natural Diuretics

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  The Beatitudes help us understand what should be our attitudes, says Pastor Flemons. When our attitudes are right, we can receive the blessings of the LORD. Jesus said those who mourn will be blessed with comfort. But it may not be the kind of mourning you are thinking. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  “It is not swell to swell!” says Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy. Then he discussed natural diuretics. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Deuteronomy 28:1  And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth:

John 14:26-27   But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

For Heaven’s Sake…

Naturally, your first thought when you hear the word mourn is that of someone in deep sorrow at the loss of a loved one. But it’s not primarily that kind of mourning that Christ was speaking of here.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Inspired commentary on this verse is found in the book Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, by Ellen G. White, which Pastor Flemons shared this morning.

“The mourning here brought to view is true heart sorrow for sin. Jesus says, “I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.” John 12:32. And as one is drawn to behold Jesus uplifted on the cross, he discerns the sinfulness of humanity. He sees that it is sin which scourged and crucified the Lord of glory. He sees that, while he has been loved with unspeakable tenderness, his life has been a continual scene of ingratitude and rebellion. He has forsaken his best Friend and abused heaven’s most precious gift. He has crucified to himself the Son of God afresh and pierced anew that bleeding and stricken heart. He is separated from God by a gulf of sin that is broad and black and deep, and he mourns in brokenness of heart. (MB 9.2)

“Such mourning “shall be comforted.” God reveals to us our guilt that we may flee to Christ, and through Him be set free from the bondage of sin, and rejoice in the liberty of the sons of God. In true contrition we may come to the foot of the cross, and there leave our burdens. (MB 10.1)

“God is helping us understand that in order for us to get to heaven, we must have the fruit of the Spirit,” says Pastor Flemons. In the attitudes of Christians, people must see love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. The Bible says that there is no law against these (Galatians 5:22-23).

“The Saviour’s words have a message of comfort to those also who are suffering affliction or bereavement. Our sorrows do not spring out of the ground. God “doth not afflict willingly nor grieve the children of men.” Lamentations 3:33. When He permits trials and afflictions, it is “for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness.” Hebrews 12:10. If received in faith, the trial that seems so bitter and hard to bear will prove a blessing. The cruel blow that blights the joys of earth will be the means of turning our eyes to heaven. How many there are who would never have known Jesus had not sorrow led them to seek comfort in Him!” (MB 10.2)

For Health’s Sake…

Natural diuretics mentioned this morning include cornsilk tea, uva ursi, dandelion, cucumber juice, and celery juice. When your feet or legs swell, a lot of the time it is due to hypertension and a diet that includes high sodium foods. You are retaining water. Usually, this happens to women.

Cornsilk tea – The silky stringlike material found just inside of the husk on a corn cob is cornsilk. This makes a wonderfully powerful diuretic that is mild and tasty. It is usually dried out before use and can be purchased at a health food store and steeped in 16 ounces of boiled water for about 10 minutes. It helps you urinate the excess fluid out. When the legs and feet are swollen, the kidneys and urinary system need to be stimulated to help reverse the edema.

Uva ursi – You can find it in a powder, a capsule, a tea, and a liquid extract or tincture. A dropperful of the tincture is the adult dosage. An adult dosage is usually between 20-40 drops.

Dandelion – Like uva ursi, dandelion can be effectively used in a tincture to help reverse edema.

Cucumber and celery –  These are wonderful foods with diuretic properties. Juicing and drinking 16 ounces of cucumber or celery in this concentrated form will prompt urination and help reverse edema.
