Worship: Wonders of Creation / Wellness: The Throat and Esophagus

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:6,9). The Creator GOD finished creating the heaven and the earth in six days. Every day, God looked at his new creation and saw that it was good. But on the sixth day, all was finished, and it was very good. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, taught the physiology of the throat and esophagus and their functions in simple terms. (Read more below.)

Listeners Speak Out: “Thanking God for this ministry so much! I loved yesterday and today…I love [that] I am learning the health part of the gospel…that I may use it…I can actually follow this! By God’s grace I will do this and be consistent and study. I don’t have the money to go to school so this is so needed. I am loving it! Yes you had those before, but it is something different now… God is so good And I love that I can go back and go over it til I get it! I see that this new year thus far is taking things [and] breaking them down in order from the very beginning — back to Genesis… Worship, health, wellness… the complete gospel spiritually, physically, and mentally. Thank you Lord God in the name of Jesus.”—Annette Gillam (Michigan)

Words of Encouragement

Psalm 65:11  Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.

Deuteronomy 28:10  And all people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.

For Heaven’s Sake…

It was very good because God had created everything necessary for man’s happiness. Then in His own image, he created man and woman. They were His crowning act of creation. They were given dominion over all other created inhabitants of the earth.

Together they celebrated Earth’s first Sabbath and their first day as husband and wife. They explored the beauty of Earth with all its splendor. It was exceeding abundant in every way and far more than they could have ever asked or hoped for.

Their garments were not artificial. They were clothed with the light of their creator. He had made them in His own image and likeness.

Psalm 104:1-2  Bless the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain.

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Psalm 8:6-8  Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Adam and Eve were perfect for each other. “Eve was made from a rib in Adam’s side, signifying that she would not control him as the head. Neither would she be trampled under his feet. Unmarred by sin, theirs was a happy home,” says Pastor Flemons.

But something happened to Earth. Something happened to God’s glorious creation and all its inhabitants. Stay tuned.

For Health’s Sake…

The throat, called the pharynx, is the body’s second gate. The mouth is the first gate. The throat is the second gate, because you choose to swallow or not swallow foods and liquids. When you do swallow, a flap called the epiglottis flattens and covers the air passage, to prevent foods and liquids from entering the voice box. That’s why you can’t sing and swallow at the same time. Hmmm, maybe that’s why we were told to not sing during mealtimes.

The throat leads foods and liquids through the esophagus, a muscular tube, which then channels them to the stomach. Although the esophagus has a blend of striated and smooth muscle, the upper two-thirds consist of a more striated muscle, similar to that in the upper arm where you make a muscle. More smooth muscle is located in the lower one-third region.

This smooth muscle contracts involuntarily, promoting the movement of food through the esophagus. This wavelike movement of foods through the esophagus is called peristalsis. It is similar to that of a snake, which swallows its victims whole, which then is conveyed deeper into the digestive tract of that snake until completely digested.

The esophagus secretes a thin layer of mucus that lines the entire inner length of the tube. It is quite sensitive to acids. And it does not tolerate the strong, caustic acids found in the thickly lined stomach. This is why indigestion and acid reflux burns. It is painful when the stomach acids that are propelled upward into the esophagus penetrates the thin layer of mucus.

Because the esophagus has very large blood vessels, it is rich in blood supply. Severe hypertension and liver problems usually come from a life of alcohol consumption. These vessels become weakened and varicose. This is called esophageal varices. The vessels can rupture and spill large amounts of blood into the esophagus, causing the vomiting of blood. This can be fatal.

When a person vomits, the two valves (or sphincters) located at either end of the esophagus open involuntarily when the diaphragm constricts and squeezes the stomach. This motion pulls downward on the esophagus and projects the irritating foreign substance out of the stomach, through the esophagus, and out through the mouth. The body is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

To properly care for this amazing creation of God, you must chew your foods until they are liquified. Then swallow. Large chunks of food can strip the thin lining of the esophagus.

Avoid doing anything that will cause excessive acids in the stomach, because eventually they will go backward into the esophagus and damage it. That includes chewing gum and candy, eating the flesh of dead animals, eating between meals, overeating, drinking coffee, and drinking with your meal. By all means don’t drink alcohol or take illegal drugs.
