Words of Encouragement

Daniel 12:1  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Isaiah 40:5  And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

For Heaven’s Sake…

King Saul kept David close to him after David killed Goliath. He thought the presence of David would provide safety for himself. He had at times realized that he was unfit to govern God’s people. And he knew that God was with David.

It was God, however, that had connected David with Saul. This way, David might become acquainted with courtly affairs in preparation for his future greatness as king. “It would enable him to gain the confidence of the nation.”

Soon, however, the seeds of jealousy would spring up from a bitter root in the heart of Saul. As Saul and David returned from battle, women from all cities of Israel sang and danced for them. “One company sang, ‘Saul hath slain his thousands,” while another company took up the strain, and responded, ‘And David his ten thousands.’ The demon of jealousy entered the heart of the king. He was angry because David was exalted above himself in the song of the women of Israel. In place of subduing these envious feelings, he displayed the weakness of his character, and exclaimed. ‘They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?’ PP 650.1

“One great defect in the character of Saul was his love of approbation. This trait had had a controlling influence over his actions and thoughts; everything was marked by his desire for praise and self-exaltation. His standard of right and wrong was the low standard of popular applause. No man is safe who lives that he may please men, and does not seek first for the approbation of God. It was the ambition of Saul to be first in the estimation of men; and when this song of praise was sung, a settled conviction entered the mind of the king that David would obtain the hearts of the people and reign in his stead.” PP 650.2

When we don’t fully surrender to God, we invite Satan in. With one cherished sin, without full repentance, the life will be poisoned. Evil impulses were not restrained, even to his hurt and to the hurt of anyone in his assumed way. Saul’s judgment was turned upside down. In one unprovoked moment, he would plunge into a fury of passion that would be detrimental to anyone nearby who dared oppose his will—whether real or imagined. Thus, David became a fugitive. Saul wanted him dead.

Wisely, David took refuge in the home of the prophet Samuel. There the Spirit of God controlled even those charged with taking the life of David. Instead, they began to prophesy. After sending several teams of messengers to kill David, Saul became exasperated that every time the messengers would end up only prophesying. At last, he went himself. As he approached the prophet’s home, the same thing happened to him. It became public knowledge. But David knew not to trust in this strange and new and apparently safe behavior of Saul as being the new normal. He left the home of the prophet and in time confided in Jonathan, his closest friend, the son of Saul. “As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death” 1 Samuel 20:3.

Soon Saul proved to Jonathan, who had trusted his father’s apparent conversion, that he was more satanic and furious as ever. When Jonathan questioned his father for the reason of his hatred for David, he nearly lost his own life. In a sudden rage, his father hurled at him the spear that had been intended for David. Grieved, Jonathan left. Later in tearful parting words with David, Jonathan confirmed David’s earlier conclusion. After embracing and weeping bitterly, the close companions separated. And David fled again. Eventually, he took refuge in the cave of Adullam, where the fifty-seventh psalm was composed and remains as a token of that experience.

Through the course of events and still in search of David, the madness of Saul led him to kill a city of priests, all the men and women, children and infants, oxen, asses, and sheep. He was fully under the control of Satan. All of Israel was filled with horror at the deeds of their chosen king. Still, Saul had only behaved in the same manner of the unbelieving kings of the other nations they themselves had wanted to imitate. Who knew what would be next?

For Health’s Sake…

There are four basic phases in the menstrual cycle. Day 1 to day 5 is the menstrual phase. Day 1 to day 13 is the Follicular phase. Day 14 is the ovulation phase. And day 15 to day 28 is the luteal phase.

During the menstrual phase, the uterus sheds its inner lining of soft tissues and blood vessels. They exit the body through the vagina as menstrual fluid. Normally, 10 – 80 ml of blood is lost this way. Abdominal cramps are normal. They are caused by the contraction of the uterine and the abdominal muscles to expel the menstrual fluid.

During the follicular phase, the pituitary gland secretes a hormone that stimulates the growth of egg cells in the ovaries. One egg cell begins to grow in the follicle, a sac-like structure, which itself secretes a hormone that stimulates the uterus to develop the endometrium, a lining of blood vessels and soft tissue.

During the ovulation phase, the pituitary glad secretes a hormone that causes the ovary to release the full-grown egg cell, which then gets swept into the Fallopian tube. This happens in one day.

During the luteal phase, the egg cell remains in the Fallopian tube 24 hours. If during that time a sperm does not successfully penetrate the egg, the egg cell disintegrates. By day 28, the hormone that causes the uterus to retain its endometrium has been used up, and the menstrual phase of the next cycle begins.
