For Heaven’s Sake…
Just as God had Elisha use salt to heal the bitter waters at one of the schools of the prophets, God’s people are to act as salt in a bitter world of problems. Salt preserves and adds flavor that enhances the taste. God’s people are to do the same for the polluted waters of problems in the lives of those around us.
Water represents the Holy Spirit, as described in Isaiah 44:3, which says, “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.” It is the Holy Spirit that gives us victory over sin. And victory over sin releases us from the condemnation of the law. The fruit of the Holy Spirit in our lives is manifested in our behavior with these qualities: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. (Read Galatians 5:22-23.) When the Holy Spirit is not in control of our lives, we manifest that by our behavior as well.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness [or lustful and lewd behavior], idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance [or quarrelsomeness], emulations [envious rivalry], wrath [vengeful anger], strife [bitter conflict, contention], seditions [dissension, resistance against lawful authority], heresies [opposition to religious truth or church dogma], envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
“The healing of the waters of Jericho was accomplished, not by any wisdom of man, but by the miraculous interposition of God. Those who had rebuilt the city were undeserving of the favor of Heaven; yet He who “maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust,” saw fit in this instance to reveal, through this token of compassion, His willingness to heal Israel of their spiritual maladies. Matthew 5:45.PK 231.1
“The world needs evidences of sincere Christianity. The poison of sin is at work at the heart of society. Cities and towns are steeped in sin and moral corruption. The world is full of sickness, suffering, and iniquity. Nigh and afar off are souls in poverty and distress, weighed down with a sense of guilt and perishing for want of a saving influence. The gospel of truth is kept ever before them, yet they perish because the example of those who should be a savor of life to them is a savor of death. Their souls drink in bitterness because the springs are poisoned, when they should be like a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.PK 232.1
“To the heart that has become purified, all is changed. Transformation of character is the testimony to the world of an indwelling Christ. The Spirit of God produces a new life in the soul, bringing the thoughts and desires into obedience to the will of Christ; and the inward man is renewed in the image of God. Weak and erring men and women show to the world that the redeeming power of grace can cause the faulty character to develop into symmetry and abundant fruitfulness.PK 233.2″
“As those who have been cleansed and sanctified through a knowledge of Bible truth engage heartily in the work of soulsaving, they will become indeed a savor of life unto life. And as daily they drink of the inexhaustible fountain of grace and knowledge, they will find that their own hearts are filled to overflowing with the Spirit of their Master, and that through their unselfish ministry many are benefited physically, mentally, and spiritually. The weary are refreshed, the sick restored to health, and the sin-burdened relieved. In far-off countries thanksgiving is heard from the lips of those whose hearts are turned from the service of sin unto righteousness.PK 234.”

For Health’s Sake…
The skeletal system provides support and structure to the body, just as the law of God provides support and structure to our lives, which we already discussed. When God created us, He put within our physiology the plan of redemption. Like the wilderness sanctuary and brick-and-mortar temple reflected Christ, so do our body temples. (Read Psalm 77:13 and John 14:6.)
Besides support and structure, the skeletal system allows movement, provides storage, and blood cell formation. “For in him we live, and move, and have our being…. (Acts 17:28).” Just as the testimony is stored inside the ark (Exodus 25:21), the bones store calcium, until it is needed by the blood. The blood of Jesus was spilled in behalf of guilty man. In His blood is blended justice and mercy, according to the plan of redemption.
There are four types of bones: long, short, flat, and irregular. Also, there are four types of laws: Ten Commandments (the moral law), statutes, judgments, and ordinances. Statutes, like short bones are designed to address a particular situation. The flat bones represent judgments, which carry penalties for sin. (Read Isaiah 48:22.) Ordinances are represented by the irregular bones. They provide special application to the ministry of Christ. The ordinances written by Moses are those referred to in Colossians 2:14, which were blotted out and nailed to the cross. They were always housed in the side of the ark, as opposed to inside of the ark, like the Ten Commandments.
There are eight cranial bones. Eight people were saved in Noah’s ark. Turned upside down, the skull forms the shape of a boat. As the boat saved Noah and his family during the flood, the law saves us from a flood of temptations. The skull covers the face and the head, where all five senses are housed. Our senses are the portals that must be protected from the entrance of temptation to sin. (Read Genesis 3:1-6.)
The twenty-four vertebrae should remind us of the twenty-four elders that sit around the throne of God. And the spinal cord represents Christ, who came down from the throne to die for our sins. The back bone is like a ladder and also represents Christ, who was the ladder shown to Jacob in a dream. The ladder, like Jesus, connects heaven with earth. (Read Genesis 28:12 and John 1:51.) And the two sets of twelve ribs represent the twelve apostles and the twelve tribes. The ribs guard the internal organs of the body, as the word of the apostles guard the faith of God’s people.
And that is the gospel in the bones!
