Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Nehemiah, the king’s cupbearer, was permitted to journey to Jerusalem to complete the rebuilding of the city walls. Only the temple and portions of the city had been rebuilt. The walls being still in ruins kept the inhabitants in constant alarm. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, is focusing on diseases of the skin during the month of May. The focus of this study is eczema. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

Jeremiah 9:24  But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Jeremiah 33:14  Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.

For Heaven’s Sake…

Thankfully, King Artaxerxes had provided “royal letters to the governors of the provinces” along the route to Jerusalem. This secured for Nehemiah “honorable reception and prompt assistance. No enemy dared molest the official who was guarded by the power of the Persian king and treated with marked consideration by the provincial rulers. His arrival in Jerusalem, however, with a military escort, showing that he had come on some important mission, excited the jealousy of the heathen tribes living near the city, who had so often indulged their enmity against the Jews by heaping upon them injury and insult. Foremost in this evil work were certain chiefs of these tribes, Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian. From the first these leaders watched with critical eyes the movements of Nehemiah and endeavored by every means in their power to thwart his plans and hinder his work. PK 635.1

“The opposition and discouragement that the builders in Nehemiah’s day met from open enemies and pretended friends is typical of the experience that those today will have who work for God. Christians are tried, not only by the anger, contempt, and cruelty of enemies, but by the indolence, inconsistency, lukewarmness, and treachery of avowed friends and helpers. Derision and reproach are hurled at them. And the same enemy that leads to contempt, at a favorable opportunity uses more cruel and violent measures. PK 644.3

“Satan takes advantage of every unconsecrated element for the accomplishment of his purposes. Among those who profess to be the supporters of God’s cause there are those who unite with His enemies and thus lay His cause open to the attacks of His bitterest foes. Even some who desire the work of God to prosper will yet weaken the hands of His servants by hearing, reporting, and half believing the slanders, boasts, and menaces of His adversaries. Satan works with marvelous success through his agents, and all who yield to their influence are subject to a bewitching power that destroys the wisdom of the wise and the understanding of the prudent. But, like Nehemiah, God’s people are neither to fear nor to despise their enemies. Putting their trust in God, they are to go steadily forward, doing His work with unselfishness, and committing to His providence the cause for which they stand. PK 645.1

“Amidst great discouragement, Nehemiah made God his trust, his sure defense. And He who was the support of His servant then has been the dependence of His people in every age. In every crisis His people may confidently declare, ‘If God be for us, who can be against us?’ Romans 8:31. However craftily the plots of Satan and his agents may be laid, God can detect them, and bring to nought all their counsels. The response of faith today will be the response made by Nehemiah, ‘Our God shall fight for us;’ for God is in the work, and no man can prevent its ultimate success.” PK 645.2

For Health’s Sake…

The terms dermatitis and eczema are synonymous terms. They refer to non-specific (innate immune) reactions to a wide variety of stimuli. This basically means that the reaction of the body does not involve the more complex immune reactions that include the production of antibodies and memory cells. Dermatitis has two main classifications: endogenous and exogenous.

Endogenous means that it arises from internal factors. Exogenous means that it is caused by some contact with external stimulus. It is sometimes hard to distinguish between the two, and their distinction is often blurred.

Dermatitis is characterized by the following skin manifestations:

  • redness of skin caused by inflammation
  • papules
  • vesicles

The main symptom of dermatitis is itching (pruritus). If the lesion does not itch, it probably is not dermatitis. The itching leads to scratching and rubbing, and this abrasion causes the skin to thicken. There is then painful cracking and fissures of dry thick skin.

Dermatitis is caused by allergens and / or irritants. Allergens are substances you are allergic to, while irritants are substances that irritate your skin.  It can be a food or something in the environment. It can come from something you touch or some problem within the body. Dermatitis, therefore is caused by toxins and irritants to the skin from outside and inside sources.

Whenever you have allergies and / or autoimmune diseases, you should suspect some level of leaky gut syndrome.

The toxins or irritant causes an increase of histamine from mast cells (tissue) or basophil cells into skin tissue and swelling. Complement protein from the blood goes in the tissue and draws phagocyte cells from the immune system to kill bacteria and other pathogens.

When the allergen or irritant comes from the outside, dermatitis is caused because the body is blocking its entrance into the blood by causing inflammation. When the allergen or irritant comes from the inside, the body is trying to release the offending agent out of the blood into the skin tissue causing inflammation.

Regardless of the source of the problem, says Pastor Flemons, “There is always an increase of the inflammatory process.”
