Worship: How to Study the Bible, Part 4 / Wellness: How to Relieve Stress with Diet

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Having discussed studying the Bible precept upon precept, next was line upon line.  “Line upon line,” means word upon word, says Pastor Flemons, as he quoted Psalm 19:1-4, after asking two important questions: What shape is the earth? And What shape is the world?

If you see a Scripture, he says, read the text above it and below it. Never isolate a verse and pull it away from its context. Using Acts 10:1-6, 9-19, and verse 28, he illustrated what happens when you fail to do that and why you shouldn’t. It’s about our attitude, as well, he says. Isaiah 29:13 lets us know that our attitude determines our altitude in understanding  God’s Word.

In its teachings, the Bible is consistent from Genesis to Revelation, says Pastor Flemons. We just need to be humble and be willing to follow wherever Christ leads, even if it means leaving our mother church.

Worship: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says that you can relieve stress with diet. A diet of sugary foods causes the body to assume and remain in a fight-or-flight state of being. The body can endure long abuse. However, over time abuse debilitates the body. Blood pressure is raised. Heart rate is increased. Muscles remain tense.

The way out is a total plant-based, whole foods diet, says Pastor Flemons. He says you should eat lots of raw foods, lots of vegetables, and whole grains. Vary the grains, he says. Especially include quinoa and millet and cous cous. They are high in the B vitamins, he says.

He also advises eating lots of sprouts. He specifically named alfalfa sprouts, but encourages eating other kinds of sprouts as well. By all means, however, you must stop eating sugary foods. Even naturally sweetened fruits may need to be avoided until the body has been reset.

Chia seeds in grape juice is a wonderful treat and way to include the omegas in the diet. Omegas also reduce stress. Pastor Flemons shared a quick and easy recipe for gelling chia seeds in grape juice or in a stevia sweetened lemonade for those with sugar restrictions. He says, “It’s delicious!”
