Words of Encouragement

1 John 5:14-15  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

Isaiah 40:29-31  He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.

For Heaven’s Sake…

Nabal, Abigail’s husband, railed on David’s delegation of soldiers seeking provisions for David’s army. They had been a wall of protection for Nabal’s shepherds. They had taken nothing and had received nothing in exchange. They were only seeking from Nabal what was customary. Adding insult to injury, Nabal not only refused the provisions but irreverently demanded to know who David was. This same David, anointed and next in line to be Israel’s king, had already slain the giant Goliath and saved trembling Israel from certain defeat by the Philistines.

David immediately set out to kill selfish and arrogant Nabal. He meant to leave nothing in sight of Nabal and whatever belonged to him. But then he met Abigail, and everything changed.

Having learned of her husband’s refusal to provide relief to those who had done him such valuable service, Abigail had quickly and quietly taken from their rich abundance and set out to intercept David and his army.

“She met them in a covert of a hill. ‘And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience.’ Abigail addressed David with as much reverence as though speaking to a crowned monarch. Nabal had scornfully exclaimed, ‘Who is David?’ but Abigail called him, ‘my lord.’ With kind words she sought to soothe his irritated feelings, and she pleaded with him in behalf of her husband. With nothing of ostentation or pride, but full of the wisdom and love of God, Abigail revealed the strength of her devotion to her household; and she made it plain to David that the unkind course of her husband was in no wise premeditated against him as a personal affront, but was simply the outburst of an unhappy and selfish nature. PP 666.1

“‘Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.’ Abigail did not take to herself the credit of this reasoning to turn David from his hasty purpose, but gave to God the honor and the praise. She then offered her rich provision as a peace offering to the men of David, and still pleaded as if she herself were the one who had so excited the resentment of the chief. PP 666.2

“‘I pray thee,’ she said, ‘forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.’ Abigail presented by implication the course that David ought to pursue. He should fight the battles of the Lord. He was not to seek revenge for personal wrongs, even though persecuted as a traitor. She continued: ‘Though man be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God. . . . And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have done to my lord according to all the good that He hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel; that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offense of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: and when the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.’ 1 Samuel 25:29:31, R. V. PP 666.3

Drawing lessons for “hopeless” marriages from this study, Pastor Flemons listed these principles. First, husbands and wives are anointed by God in the sacred institution of marriage, even if you believe you married the wrong person. That is why marriage must be maintained, except for adultery. Distance may be required in abuse cases. Sometimes when one spouse is destroying the marriage or family and is being unreasonable, without the knowledge of the other spouse, God may inspire one spouse to do something that will save the marriage, life or soul. When one anointed spouse rails on another anointed spouse, the offense is not to be taken as a personal affront. The affront or rejection is to God. Always try acts of mercy first. Only after acts of mercy have failed, should acts of justice be engaged. A soft answer or quietness is always right when being railed on. Fight only the battles of the Lord; never seek personal revenge. Be grateful under reproof. Watch for actual evidence of genuine reformation; never place your life in jeopardy. Never make unholy relationships. It could lead to all out war against your own people. Live your life in such a way that you have no regrets. If you have found yourself violating any of these principles, acknowledge your wrongs, accept the consequences, ask God and allow Him to help you make it right.

(This study is based on 1 Samuel 22:20-23; 23-27, and chapter 65, “The Magnanimity of David,” in Patriarchs and Prophets (PP), by Ellen G. White, available at this link: http://www.whiteestate.org/books/pp/pp.asp.)

For Health’s Sake…

While sexual response in males is stimulated by sight, touch stimulates females. Within an intimate relationship, a blinding element kicks in to bind companions beyond their faults. This is why intimacy belongs only in marriages.

We studied a bit of spermatogenesis. Sperm, manufactured in the testicles of the male, is the seed of males. We studied semen, the liquid ejaculate that enters the woman. We learned how prostate fluid contributes to the alkalinity of the semen, which preserves the life of the sperm upon entrance into the acidic cavity of the female. This is critical for its mission, as it travels toward the egg for fertilization.

Hormones, we learned, govern much of the reproductive system, but they will be further discussed during the monthlong study of the endocrine system. The three types of the female hormone, estrogen, will be discussed, as well as progesterone and testosterone. All of these hormones exist in both males and females at varying and appropriate degrees.

Oogenesis, the production of the egg within the ovary, was covered, as well as the menstrual cycle with its four phases. All of these contribute to the foundation for further study during the remaining weeks of this month and particularly for next week’s study of the diseases of the reproductive system.
