For Heaven’s Sake…
The simple formula for proper Bible study is found in Isaiah 28:10, the key text for today’s broadcast. “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little.” You will notice a doubling twice. According to Genesis 41:32, when a thing is doubled God is saying that the thing is certain to be established and will quickly happen or shortly come to pass.
Genesis 41:32: “And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.”
Using God’s ordained method for studying the Bible will establish your understanding of His Word and cause you to quickly learn it.
Studying precept upon precept will reveal that the Bible is consistent in all teachings from Genesis to Revelation. Studying line upon line basically directs everything to be studied within its context.
Prayerfully gathering Bible texts regarding a single topic, while considering the surrounding texts for contextualization, to be sure, is the method for proper Bible study. It will produce clear understanding and prevent error.
The problem is vain worship and slanting Bible texts with personal opinion and doctrine: “In vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). Why does this happen? According to Isaiah 29:13, “Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.” In other words the heart is not right toward God. It is far from Him.
As mentioned in yesterday’s broadcast, approaching Bible study with a humble and prayerful spirit and being willing to follow where Jesus leads, even if it means parting from your mother church, are critical components of successful Bible study.
Keep in mind when studying Scripture that a story may be told from different vantage points. One person may actually see one person emerge from a cave before he or she retreats and returns. Another person may remain long enough to see an additional person emerge. Both stories are valid testimonies. The key is focusing on the main principle or teaching and not allowing such slight differences become a focal point of dissension. Never allow one seemingly dissenting Bible verse carry more weight than a list of Bible texts that confirm the same principle.
