Worship: Alcohol from the Bible / Wellness: Alcohol’s Effects on the Body

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake The Bible is clear. Alcohol is not a good thing. Even the priests are deceived when they drink strong drink both literally and doctrinally. Pastor Flemons explained both applications of Isaiah 28:7. (Read more below.)

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Whatever benefit that can be extracted from fermented grape juice is already in the unfermented grape juice and can be ingested without any injury to the system, says Pastor Flemons. There is no need to drink wine or stronger alcoholic beverage for any minuscule benefit they are said to provide. (Read more below.)

Words of Encouragement

2 Timothy 3:14-15  But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Malachi 4:2  But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

For Heaven’s Sake…

Read Isaiah 28:7: “But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.”

Doctrinally speaking, fermented grape juice is a symbol of false doctrine. The Bible calls it the wine of Babylon (the mother/woman/church of harlots, according to Revelation 17:5). It is the wine of error, false doctrine, that leads to the wrath of God. They are out of the way or off the path that leads to life eternal. They err in vision and  stumble in judgment. People are deceived.

Pastor Flemons said that since symbolic wine is not good for the soul, literal wine that is fermented grape juice is not good for the body. He referred to Revelation 14:8: “And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Literally speaking, the passage clearly describes the typical behavior of the drunkard. They err in literal vision. They stumble, literally. They don’t have functional use of their faculties.

The words grape juice are not in the Bible. The term used is wine. When it went bad, soured, it was still wine. An article that discusses the distinction of the Hebrew use of two words to describe fresh grape juice as opposed to fermented grape juice is provided at this link: (coming!).

“Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all” (Isaiah 65:8). A cluster of grapes, freshly squeezed is grape juice as we know it. It is unfermented.

A blessing is in it for the upset stomach, as confirmed in 1 Timothy 5:23. Timothy had a stomach ailment. Paul advised “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.”

Grape juice is a natural antacid. It neutralizes the acid in the stomach and soothes. For an upset stomach, slowly sip on 6 ozs. of grape juice, says Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy. He suggests replacing the next meal with the 6 ozs. of grape juice.

Who drinks alcohol for an upset stomach? Pastor Flemons could only think of one group: alcoholics. Alcoholics are the only group that gets relief from stomach pain by drinking alcohol. That is because they are painfully going through withdrawals from not having the alcohol as usual.

For Health’s Sake…

Alcohol has negative effects on the body, says Pastor Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness and naturopathy. We all know that alcohol can change the mood and behavior and cause confusion, unclear communication, and stumbling. But alcohol can literally change the look and operation of the brain as it interferes with the brain’s communication pathways, according to “Alcohol’s Effects on the Body,” an online publication of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

A single binge on alcohol can damage the heart, just as drinking it over a long period. It can cause the heart muscle to stretch and droop. It’s called  cardiomyopathy. It can also cause the heart to have an irregular heart beat (arrhythmias), stroke, and high blood pressure.

Heavy drinking can inflame the liver and cause alcoholic hepatitis, steatosis (fatty liver), fibrosis, and cirrhosis. It can also lead to pancreatitis, and certain cancers: mouth, esophagus, throat, liver, and breast. Because it weakens the immune system, chronic drinkers are at a greater risk of contracting a wide variety of diseases, including pneumonia and tuberculosis.

It seems needless to say that there is no overriding benefit to drinking alcohol. The article concludes with this statement: “Drinking a lot on a single occasion slows your body’s ability to ward off infections – even up to 24 hours after getting drunk.” The full article is accessible at https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/alcohols-effects-body.

We don’t need a drop of alcohol. Why would you want to drink a little poison? Just drink the grape juice, says Pastor Flemons.
