Worship: For Heaven’s Sake Balaam, the prophet of God, was bribed to curse God’s people, as they approached the very borders of the promised land. Although he tried, only blessings sprang forth from his mouth. God would not allow His people to be cursed as long as they were faithful. Then Balaam tried another method that succeeded. For Heaven’s Sake…
Balaam induced the people of God to commit fornication. He suggested the pagan king of Moab hold a grand festival. A huge number of God’s people were easily induced to attend, because they trusted the prophet, although he had departed from doing God’s will.
They ventured upon the forbidden ground, and were entangled in the snare of Satan. Beguiled with music and dancing, and allured by the beauty of heathen” idol worship, they turned away from doing God’s will. As they indulged in feasting, they also indulged in wine, which “beclouded their senses and broke down the barriers of self-control. Passion had full sway,” and they “participated in the most degrading” ceremonies. (Quotes are of Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 454.3, regarding Numbers 25.)
Even now, says Pastor Flemons, “We are on the borders of Canaan. Satan will do all he can to keep you out of the kingdom. You are safe only as you obey the word of the LORD.”
