Worship: The Church at Smyrna / Wellness: Why You Shouldn’t Sleep Right After a Meal

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  “Prosperity multiplies a mass of professors. Adversity purges them out of the church.” {4T 89.2} Smyrna, one of the seven churches addressed in Revelation, is one of only two of the seven that received no condemnation, says Pastor Flemons. That is because adversity, rather than purge them out of the church, revealed their genuine love for God. “Great numbers sealed their testimony with their blood. Noble and slave, rich and poor, learned and ignorant, were alike slain without mercy.”  GC88 39.2

“They were condemned as rebels against the empire, as foes of religion, and pests to society. Great numbers were thrown to wild beasts or burned alive in the amphitheaters. Some were crucified; others were covered with the skins of wild animals, and thrust into the arena to be torn by dogs. Their punishment was often made the chief entertainment at public fetes. Vast multitudes assembled to enjoy the sight, and greeted their dying agonies with laughter and applause.”  GC88 40.1

“Under the fiercest persecution, these witnesses for Jesus kept their faith unsullied. Though deprived of every comfort, shut away from the light of the sun, making their home in the dark but friendly bosom of the earth, they uttered no complaint. With words of faith, patience, and hope, they encouraged one another to endure privation and distress. The loss of every earthly blessing could not force them to renounce their belief in Christ. Trials and persecution were but steps bringing them nearer their rest and their reward.  GC88 41.1

Jesus had these words for Smyrna: “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Worship: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, says you really don’t want to go to bed with undigested food on your stomach. When you wake up and feel as though a truck has run over you, it’s because your digestive system has been working and not resting all those hours you were sleeping.

The process of digestion requires energy. In fact, you naturally become drowsy after eating, because blood is drained from the brain to help with digestion. Therefore, “A light stroll is one of the best things you can do for your health,” after a meal, says Pastor Flemons. The stroll helps to equalize blood circulation to the brain.

Your final meal before bedtime must be completed five hours prior. Or it must be very light, like a fruit smoothie, so that digestion can be completed fairly quickly: say, within a couple of hours.

Words of Encouragement

John 3:36  He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life. (Also read Conflict and Courage, CC 71.)

Jeremiah 31:33  But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Also read With God at Dawn, WGD 67.)

Worship: Christians, Colorful Cosmetics, Jewelry, and Flashy Clothes #7 / Wellness: Rest, Best Practices

Worship: For Heaven’s Sake  Isaiah 3 has special relevance to these last days. And Pastor Flemons did a verse-by-verse talk of how Isaiah 3, especially shows that church members in the last days would indeed wear colorful cosmetics, jewelry, and flashy clothes. It also shows that the liturgy of the church would change to accommodate the youth at the cost of oppression to older generations–rather those who seek to hold up the  Christian standard. In fact, Pastor Flemons told of those being kicked out of the church who hold up the Christian standard in favor of those who promote sins the Bible clearly calls abominable.

Such actions show that the denominational structure is not itself the church. He says that it is only to provide structure for the church. It is for the organization of ministerial activity. True church membership is according to the Lamb’s Book of Life. It lists the names of the faithful, the names of the obedient. “God,” says Pastor Flemons, “is calling for individual responsibility.” He says that church members need to stop putting all of the emphasis on outward adornment and display and get back to God.

He closed with this statement made to the church over a hundred years ago: “The prophecy of Isaiah 3 was presented before me as applying to these last days, and the reproofs are given to the daughters of Zion who have thought only of appearance and display. Read verse 25: ‘Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.’ I was shown that this scripture will be strictly fulfilled. Young men and women professing to be Christians, yet having no Christian experience, and having borne no burdens and felt no individual responsibility, are to be proved. They will be brought low in the dust and will long for an experience in the things of God, which they have failed to obtain.” {1T 270.1}

[For additional details, please read Isaiah 3 and Testimonies for the Church, volume 1, p. 270.1 (1T 270). Also, listen to the recording to hear the commentary of Pastor Flemons and hear him sing Hymn 606, “Once to Every Man and Nation.”]

Wellness: For Health’s Sake  Shelem Flemons, a doctor of biblical wellness, shared points about how to get proper rest daily.

  1. 1. Go to bed and wake up at regular times every day.
  2. 2. Go to bed no later than 9:30 every night.
  3. 3. Never eat within 5 hours of bedtime.
  4. 4. Retire after two hours ONLY if the last meal consists of fruit with zwieback, crackers or air-popped popcorn. Although this is permissible, it is not encouraged.
  5. 5. Don’t behold or dwell on negative things before going to bed.
  6. 6. Sleep in a well-ventilated room.
  7. 7. Read and meditate on some Scripture before going to bed.
  8. 8. Drink a relaxing tea before going to bed, if you have trouble sleeping. The ratio of the tea mixture is one teaspoon of the bulk herb to one cup of just-boiled water. Allow the herb to steep in the boiled water 10 to 15 minutes. Do not add any sweetner to the tea. Relaxing tea can be made with any combination of the following herbs: Chamomile, Peppermint, Hops, Scullcap, Valerian, Lady’s Slipper.

Rest is the fourth wellness principle of the REFRESHING Way lifestyle.  REFRESHING stands for Rely on God. Eat healthy. Fresh air. Rest. Exercise. Self-Control (temperance). H2O (drink water). In the sun. Never give up. Give to others.

John 13:35  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. (Also read My Life Today, ML 80.)
